G’Day Mate! Unexpected Lessons from Down Under

Studying abroad is always discussed as a life-changing experience, and while I knew it would be amazing, I wasn’t prepared for just how transformative my time in Australia would be. Beyond the stunning landscapes and adorable kangaroos, I learned some truly unexpected lessons that have stuck with me long after I said “see ya later” to the land of sunshine and slang.

1. Decoding the Aussie Dictionary: Forget what you think you know about English! My first week in Australia felt like navigating a foreign language. “G’day,” “yeah nah yeah,” “brekkie,” “arvo” – it was a whirlwind of unfamiliar words. I quickly learned that “thongs” are not what I initially envisioned (they’re flip-flops!), and that asking for a “biscuit” will get you a cookie, not what we call a biscuit back home. Navigating the Aussie lingo was a hilarious crash course in cultural immersion and taught me the importance of asking questions and embracing the confusion. It also made me realize how much language is tied to culture and how fun it can be to learn a whole new way of speaking.

2. Confidence, Sunshine, and Self-Discovery: There’s something about the laid-back Aussie lifestyle that just oozes confidence. Maybe it’s the sunshine, the surf, or the general “no worries” attitude, but I found myself feeling more comfortable in my own skin than ever before. Being surrounded by people who embraced individuality and weren’t afraid to be themselves gave me the courage to do the same. I tried new things, pushed myself out of my comfort zone, and discovered a newfound sense of self-assurance. Turns out, a little sunshine and a lot of “good on ya” can do wonders for your confidence.

An overlook by Springbrook Falls, Australia

3. The Art of Relaxation: Australians have mastered the art of relaxation. “Chill out,” “take it easy,” and “no worries” are not just phrases; they’re a way of life. The emphasis on work-life balance and enjoying the simple things was a refreshing change of pace. I learned to slow down, appreciate the beauty of a sunset, and embrace the joy of just hanging out with friends. The relaxed community fostered a sense of belonging and taught me the importance of taking time for myself and enjoying the present moment.

4. Early Bird Gets the Worm (and the Best Views): I’m not a morning person. Let’s just get that out there. But something magical happens when you’re in a place as beautiful as Australia. Waking up early to catch the sunrise over the ocean or the rainforest was an experience I’ll never forget. The quiet beauty of the morning, the vibrant colors, and the feeling of having the world to myself was truly special. I discovered that waking up early wasn’t just about seeing the sights; it was about appreciating the peace and tranquility of the early hours and starting the day with a sense of calm and purpose. Okay, I’m still not a huge morning person, but I definitely have a newfound appreciation for the beauty of dawn.

My study abroad experience in Australia was so much more than I expected. It was a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and unexpected lessons that have shaped me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. So, if you’re considering studying abroad, my advice is: Do it! Embrace the unknown, learn the lingo, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime. You might just surprise yourself with what you discover. And don’t forget your thongs! (You’ll need them.)

Chloe Smith, University of Colorado Boulder, is studying abroad with TEAN in Gold Coast, Australia.

So you’ve decided to study abroad in Australia! How exciting! The last few weeks leading up to your departure can feel very overwhelming, especially as you begin to consider what your life will be like when you arrive in Australia. The most important thing to know is that it will be the best four months of your life. You’ll attend orientation in Cairns and check off bucket-list items before you even step foot on campus, and you might even get the opportunity to go to Fiji!

When I boarded my flight in Chicago, I was filled with excitement and some anxiety about how the semester was going to go. I knew where I would be living and what classes I was taking, but what would I do on the weekends? Who would I meet? What would the food be like?

My semester started with six days in Fiji, which was the perfect opportunity for me to meet others in my program and to ease into being away from home by staying on some of the most beautiful islands in the world.

On day one, I met the twelve other participants at the airport, and we headed to the hotel on the mainland. In an effort to combat the jetlag we were all feeling after nearly 24 hours of travel, we dropped our bags and headed straight to a nature park. We hiked, swam in a waterfall, went zip-lining, and ate pizza that was cooked on the bank of the river. It was the absolute perfect introduction to life abroad.

We hiked to a waterfall and got to go swimming!

On day two, we boarded a boat from the mainland to Treasure Island. Upon our arrival at the island, we were treated to a delicious lunch and swam in crystal clear water. We even saw a nurse shark! After hanging out on the beach all day, we ate dinner as a group and explored all that the island had to offer.

The view from the main building on Treasure Island

On night three, we experienced a traditional kava ceremony with our hosts at Treasure Island. This cultural experience taught us about the history and culture of Fijians and allowed us to connect with the locals on the island.

On day four, we took a boat about an hour from the island and snorkeled with sharks. This was my favorite memory from the trip and one of the coolest things I have ever done.

After a few more days of enjoying life on Fiji time and our farewell dinner, it was time to head to Cairns.

Last sunset in Fiji

When we arrived in Cairns, we had a couple of meetings with both program directors and a representative from our university to talk about life in Australia, cultural differences, and everything we needed to know about our university. These meetings were so helpful and made me feel way more comfortable about the program. We all got to introduce ourselves and started to get to know everyone we would be with for the next several months before heading out to explore the nightlife of Cairns.

The following day, we had the morning to enjoy the pool before we ventured to a wildlife park to see some crocs, kangaroos, and koalas—a proper Australian experience without the danger of encountering them in the wild. We then took a boat to our cultural experience. Some local First Nation people taught us about their history and showed us some of the tools they used to live off the land. We enjoyed stories and chatting with the locals before we boated back to the mainland. This was an early evening because the next day, we had to be up early for my next bucket list item: snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.

The reef day was another highlight of the trip for me. We walked down to the marina early and took a boat out to a giant floating pontoon. Throughout the day, we snorkeled, ate, suntanned, and some enjoyed the pontoon’s bar. We also took a clear-bottom boat ride, where we saw turtles. This was such a cool experience, but it is a very long day of boats so if you get seasick, definitely plan ahead!

Finally, it was time for our free day! My activity of choice was the sunrise skydive, but there were tons of options including whitewater rafting, an island day trip, skydiving later in the day, and a speed boat ride. For the sunrise skydive, we left at 5:10 a.m. and were in the air before 6. While I had been skydiving before, the views were absolutely unreal, and it was an amazing experience. After riding that high for most of the day, we finished our trip with a farewell dinner that consisted of many only-in-Australia meals, including crocodile and kangaroo meat.

The view from the plane ride to go skydiving

And then it was time to head to campus! After another day of travel, we arrived in sunny Gold Coast and moved into our housing. We did a quick tour of the area with Cole to make sure we knew how to get from our off-campus housing to campus for orientation in the morning, and then we spent the evening exploring our new neighborhood. The next morning, we did a campus tour with Carol and attended our university orientation.

The week before classes started consisted entirely of going to the beach, trying new restaurants, enjoying the sunsets from our apartment, and exploring the local nightlife. We kept pretty close to our group of other TEAN participants during this week because we hadn’t met anyone outside of our program yet, but this was such a fun week. We always had something to do, even if it was just walking around our area, and we got to know our fellow Americans better.

Our sunset view from the apartment

Nearly 18 days after I first left home, I finally started classes. I’m so glad we had as much time as we did to adjust to life in Australia and get to know everyone around us because by the time classes started, I felt way more confident than I did when I first stepped on the plane. Despite any concerns I had before I left, I felt very prepared and ready to go by the time we started classes. I highly recommend taking advantage of all that TEAN has to offer during the first few weeks because they really do set you up for success!

Something about traveling to the opposite side of the world alone pushes a person to step fully out of their previous comfort zone. Studying abroad in Australia—and the traveling I was fortunate to do here—was a full leap out of mine. From the busy shores of Bondi Beach to the tranquil temples of Bali and the neon-lit streets of Tokyo, my journey these past couple of months has been one of discovery and growth.

Traveling has a way of expressing who we, deep down, are as a person, and it allows qualities to shine through that you may have never noticed before. When I first arrived in Australia, I was nervous. Even though I did not want to admit that I was, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to immerse myself in the culture of a new country. The more I explored—whether it was the laid-back lifestyle of the Gold Coast, the awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef, or the cultural richness of Burleigh Heads—I realized that traveling is not just about seeing new places. It’s about meeting new versions of yourself in those new places.

Australia was my base for adventure, but each new destination added its twist to my journey. Bali taught me how to slow down and appreciate simplicity. Gazing out over the cliffs and looking at Diamond Beach after a long haul to get to the other side of the island in the immense heat, I saw the most outstanding and beautiful natural beauty I’d ever seen.

Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida, Bali

Japan, on the other hand, challenged me in entirely new ways. Navigating Tokyo’s complexity of subways and blending into the delicate harmony of Japanese culture was humbling but empowering. Trying local delicacies, even when I had no idea what I was eating, or learning basic Japanese phrases pushed me to adapt and embrace discomfort. Seeing the locals’ happiness when we tried to partake in the rich culture here was continuously rewarding. Our small efforts were grand gestures to them. These challenges strengthened my confidence and ability to think on my feet. Each misstep—like not knowing which way to turn in the train station or struggling to understand a menu—became a lesson in resilience and adaptability.

Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan

One of the most profound gifts of studying abroad is perspective. Back home, my world felt smaller, shaped by routines and familiar surroundings. Traveling expanded that world exponentially. In Bali, I was struck by the kindness of locals who seemed to have so little yet gave so much and how a simple smile and thanks made people’s day. I admired the attention to detail in everything from tea ceremonies to city planning in Japan.

These experiences shifted my priorities. Material things mattered less; connections and experiences mattered more. So, opting to give away my chance for Christmas presents when I returned home for some extra help to get to these new locations was beyond worth it because experiences and memories matter most to me now. I saw the world through different cultural lenses, which changed how I viewed my life.

Australia gave me the space to appreciate the small, everyday moments. Studying at Bond University, I often took breaks by the beach, watching surfers catch waves with an effortless grace I deeply admired. (After taking a few surf lessons, I can confirm it’s not as effortless as it looks!)

Opera House, Sydney, Australia

Traveling to other parts of Australia, from Sydney’s iconic Opera House to the unbelievable landscapes of the Whitsundays, reinforced the importance of slowing down. Seeing multiple parts of Australia made me fall in love with the country even more than just having my life on the Gold Coast. These moments of awe and reflection aren’t just reserved for vacations—they’re everywhere, waiting to be noticed.

White Haven Beach, Whitsundays, Australia

Traveling and studying abroad changed not just me but how I approach life. I’m more confident, adaptable, and open-minded than ever. I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty, appreciate differences, and find beauty in the everyday.

If you’re on the fence about studying abroad or taking that first trip, here’s my advice: Do it. The world is out there, waiting to teach you, surprise you, and ultimately, change you. You will always have your home to return to, so it’s worth getting out there and exploring, whether it’s a drive, train, or flight away. You’ll come back with stories to tell, lessons learned, and a version of yourself you didn’t know existed.

Studying in Australia and traveling to Bali, Japan, and beyond have left me with more than just memories—they’ve given me a new lens through which to see the world and myself. And for that, I’m forever grateful.

TEAN provided us with an exclusive tour inside the Opera House, an unforgettable experience.

I’d say I am more of an untraditional student when it comes to describing the profile of an average study abroad student. For one, I attended a community college my first two years and secondly, I currently commute to my university, California Lutheran University. The “university experience” is said to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience full of meeting new friends, getting involved socially inside and outside of uni, and developing personal growth since you’re living away from home. I acknowledged early on that I would probably never get to experience this due to my circumstances.

I had dreamed of studying abroad for many years and finally had the opportunity to embark on a semester-long program at the University of Sydney in Australia this past spring. It was a dream come true, as I’ve always wanted to visit the country for its stunning nature, rich culture, and unique wildlife.

Before saying goodbye to the program, I couldn’t resist having a photoshoot at The University of Sydney’s Quadrangle, where you can find tourists and influencers posing for pictures.

Going into the program initially, I envisioned the experience as a way to get immersed in a new culture, experience a brand-new learning curriculum, and of course explore new places while abroad. The idea that I’d get to live my ideal version of the “university life” went over my head.

Looking back, I find it unbelievable that when I first received the email notifying me and the eight roommates I’d be dorming with, I didn’t think much of it. Meanwhile, most, if not all, of my roommates were panicking over the fact that there were eight girls, four rooms (each with its own bathroom), one kitchen, and one living room; rightfully so. I’m sure this may sound very overwhelming to you, but to me as a person who had never lived without their parents or independently, I was living in complete bliss and oblivion.

In the end, I couldn’t have imagined eight better roommates. They’re all incredible, intelligent, and hilarious girls I treasure deeply and continue to have friendships with after the program. Thanks to them, I have so many wonderful and life-long memories. If it weren’t for the study abroad, I never would’ve got to experience what it was like to live alongside other college students.

I couldn’t have imagined eight better roommates. This was taken at Bondi beach on one of our last days together, where we were fortunate to see one of the most beautiful sunsets yet.

Despite living off-campus, we lived very close to the university, in a student accommodation called Scape Central which was about a 10-minute walk to campus. I’m a bit biased and believe I lived in the best student accommodation amongst other University of Sydney students. Not only did we have a four-story shopping center along the way to school, but we lived just outside the central business district, the heart of Sydney. Almost everything was a walk or public transport ride away.

While yes, Sydney’s impressive public transportation is a luxury and a shock to almost everyone who lives in the States, as a Californian from an isolated small town who commutes two hours round-trip to campus every single day, this felt like an incredible convenience and a refreshing change of pace.

Out of the various public transport options Sydney had to offer, the light rail was probably my favorite next to the ferries.

During my time at the University of Sydney, I got to experience the stereotypical yet-not-so American university life I had only seen in movies or from friends. I joined several clubs such as the “Chocolate Society”, a club dedicated to chocolate connoisseurs.

For once in my college life, I didn’t feel like an outsider on campus. I could stay on campus after class to hangout with friends and explore the city without the stress of driving in traffic. It was a perfect balance of academic and personal growth, giving me a taste of independence I never had before.

The joy of hiking through a rainforest like this is unmatched! The trails at Springbrook are full of life, it was refreshing and needed. Soaking it all in with a smile (and a camera, of course), the national park is beautiful.

Before starting the descent, we stopped to take in the breathtaking view from the top of the falls. The sound of the water echoed across the valley, with the sheer cliffs and forest stretching out into the distance.

The trail leading down to Purlingbrook Falls was an easy hike. Greenery framed every step, with sunlight occasionally breaking through the canopy above. Each twist and turn, we could hear the waterfall, building excitement as we got closer.

Along the trail, we came across these incredible trees with naturally curved trunks, creating a beautiful sense of symmetry. It was like nature’s own artwork, perfectly framing the path ahead.

Standing in awe of Purlingbrook Falls, a stunning 106-meter cascade nestled in the heart of Springbrook National Park. The greenery, vibrant cliffs, and the misty roar of the falls made this spot absolutely unforgettable. It’s incredible how small you feel next to nature’s beauty. This view was worth every step of the hike.

Taking a quick break on the way down to admire the falls from another angle. Carrying my camera ensured I could capture these moments, but honestly, no photo could ever do this place justice.

Hiking up the trail, there was a staircase carved into the rock face. It felt like a natural extension of the landscape, blending seamlessly with the environment. Every step brought us closer to the falls, and the craftsmanship of the staircase was a testament to the care taken to preserve the natural beauty of this place.

After the hike, we took a moment to look back and soak in the journey. The sight of the falls from below felt even more rewarding, knowing the effort it took to get there. Surrounded by the towering cliffs, it was the perfect end.

Anagrace Fagot is a Global Ambassador at Hope College and TEAN Robina, Australia alumna. In this blog, Anagrace shares helpful tips on how to budget for your study abroad program.

Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and gain valuable experiences. Everyone I talked to said it was the highlight of their college experience or their biggest regret if they could not go. However, finances were a big factor in whether I could go abroad or not. Thankfully, I could do some research and did not let the big scary money sign scare me! It’s important to plan your finances carefully to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to budget for your study abroad adventure:

Start Early and Save Up

The earlier you start planning and saving, the better. Begin by researching the estimated costs of your program, including tuition fees, housing, and other mandatory expenses—factor in additional costs like travel, food, entertainment, and emergencies. Set realistic savings goals and track your progress regularly. I worked on campus as well as off-campus to help save up! All the hard work was worth it.

Explore Funding Options

Don’t limit yourself to personal savings. Explore various funding options to supplement your budget. Apply for scholarships and grants offered by your university, government organizations, and private foundations. These scholarships can significantly reduce your financial burden. I was able to apply and receive some scholarships which helped abundantly! As well as, once in your study abroad country, take advantage of student discounts. I was able to use a student discount on public transportation which cut my spending in half for that section of my budget!

Create a Detailed Budget

Once you have a clear understanding of your expenses, create a detailed budget. Break down your costs into categories like housing, food, transportation, entertainment, and travel. Allocate specific amounts to each category based on your priorities and research. Be realistic and factor in unexpected expenses. This will help cause less stress in the long run and help you enjoy your time abroad.

Research the cost of living in your destination country

Understanding the cost of living in your destination country is crucial for accurate budgeting. Research the average costs of housing, food, transportation, and other essential expenses. This information will help you adjust your budget accordingly and avoid unexpected financial burdens. Another factor to keep in mind is the currency difference. During my time in Australia, the Australian dollar was 66 cents to 1 United States (my home country) dollar. This was important to note as I purchase things while abroad!

Overall, my experience abroad was one of the best decisions I ever made. I would highly encourage you to take these steps if financials are a worry or even if it is not! Take the leap and make the memories of a lifetime!

Samantha Mealey is a Global Ambassador at Clemson University who went abroad to Bond University in Spring 2024. In this blog, Samantha shares her top places to visit in Australia.

Whitsundays

Whitsundays Islands were picture perfect. It was some of the clearest and bluest water I have ever seen in my life. My friends and I flew in and out of Hamilton Island and took the ferry to Airlie Beach which is where our Airbnb was. There is also an airport in Airlie that you can fly into, but we wanted to see Hamilton. This was definitely a nicer, more expensive place, but it was worth it! We were able to rent a dinghy boat for a discounted price, and we took it all around the surrounding smaller islands to snorkel and swim. Once we were back in Airlie, we explored the cute downtown area. Definitely make sure to book excursions and trips if you’re looking to go for a sunset cruise or a boat ride to the beautiful Whitehaven beach as they book up quickly!

My friends and I rented a dinghy boat at Hamilton Island, and we beached it at a nearby island to snorkel and swim!

Byron Bay

When I was picturing Australia, I was seeing a classic surf town, and I found it in Byron Bay. My friends and I loved it so much we went twice. It’s only about an hour or so away, and you can rent a car or take a bus. Be careful if you choose to uber because you may get stranded as there are rules about crossing territories. When you’re in Byron, they have a ton of nice hostel options along with Airbnbs if you are traveling in groups. There are a bunch of beaches, but there are also grass hills that people would sit on to watch the surfers ride the waves. My favorite beaches were the Pass, and Whites Beach which was a little further out. It felt like we found a hidden gem with our own private beach because there were huge rocks surrounding it. After being done at the beach, hitting the Great Northern Hotel for a night out has to be on the itinerary. It is nicknamed the “Piano Bar” because there are two pianos placed in the middle of the bar that two musicians play. They take song requests all night, and everyone sings along! If you’re living on the Gold Coast, Byron Bay is definitely a must!

This was our walk down to Whites beach. We had to walk down SO many stairs to get there, but once we were down it was really relaxing. This picture kind of shows how it was surrounded and enclosed by all of the rocks to make it feel like our private beach.

On one of our mornings in Byron, we decided to wake up to see the sunrise at the famous lighthouse there.

Adelaide

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway for amazing food and wine, plan a trip to Adelaide in Southern Australia. Barossa Valley is known for its gorgeous wineries. We were able to do a wine tasting and explore the valleys and flowers all around. The buildings against the floral backdrops of the winery were absolutely stunning! Besides the fantastic wine, my friend and I were on the lookout for all things cheese and bread, and we sure did find it. Every restaurant we went to we made sure to order some kind of cheese dish, and Adelaide did not disappoint! On top of this, we had the best Italian food since being in Australia. We had been traveling multiple weekends on end, so watching the sunsets in Adelaide was a perfect way to wind down.

This is me in front of the pretty flowers at one of the wineries in Barossa Valley!

The winery had a lot of cool buildings and architecture, and I liked the rustic design of this door.

Sydney

I won’t lie, I didn’t know much about Australia before I decided to study abroad besides the fact that I knew I wanted to go. The extent of my knowledge was basically that it was full of surfers, kangaroos, and it was home to the Sydney Opera House. And let me tell you, the pictures do not do it justice. Seeing it in person was absolutely surreal. We made our way to the Opera House at least three times a day. Besides the Opera House, my friends and I walked the Coogee to Bondi walk which was about 6 kilometers. There were so many gorgeous views of beaches and inlets along the way.

This is one of my favorite pictures of the Opera House that I took. My friends and I were sitting by the water looking at the bridge and the Opera House while we waited for the fireworks for Australia Day!

On our walk from Coogee to Bondi, this was one of my favorite places that we stopped. This inlet was super pretty and it felt quieter than the others.

Beaches of Gold Coast

Staying locally on the Gold Coast, there are so many great beaches to explore. We would wake up for sunrise (occasionally) and walk to Miami beach. It is super quiet, and there are a bunch of people walking their dogs, so if you are ever missing yours, stroll down to Miami to get your fix. They also put on weekly events called Miami Marketta which have a bunch of food vendors of all different cuisines. Burleigh Heads beach is definitely busier, but I loved this beach. The downtown area had so much to do, and the beach itself is amazing. Tweed Heads beach is further away, but worth the ride. There is a jetty to walk on with a bunch of rocks to sit on while watching all of the surfers catch the waves. It was so cool to see them do all kinds of tricks! There is also a lookout point that has an amazing view of the ocean and rocks, along with historical plaques to learn from. Back at our home base of Broad Beach, my friends and I went to the farmer’s markets that were held on the lawn in front of the beach a lot. It was a huge market with everything from fresh produce, coffee, desserts, clothes, jewelry and so much more. I got some cool trinkets for friends and family back home, and pretty earrings made by a local designer. Going to the markets is a great way to spend a Sunday morning, especially since you are just steps away from the beach!

While we were at Tweed Heads, I walked along the path to this lookout. It was a perfect place to look out into the water and across the jetty.
Honorable mentions:

While I only listed a few places in Australia that I traveled to, there are so many other amazing locations that I wish I had gotten to go to before leaving. I know people who loved Uluru (the Outback), Perth, Melbourne, the Sunshine Coast, and many others. There is so much to see and do, so get exploring!

Before arriving in Australia, I had this naiveness when imagining surfing, surfers, and the entire surf lifestyle that seemed glorified over unda. I imagined a stereotypical Aussie being a natural-born surfer who was practically glued to being in the ocean. I pictured the “Aussie surfer” as someone almost born with a surfboard, spending their days effortlessly riding waves as naturally as walking. For me, it was something I only saw photos and videos of in films, online, or from other people sharing stories.

After living in Australia for a couple of months, it was a goal of mine to get out there and experience what it’s like to catch some waves. Thankfully, studying abroad with TEAN opened me up to the possibility of surfing for the first time. After my first time, I finally understood what it takes to be a surfer, and my overall appreciation for the surfing culture grew incredibly strong. I knew I had to engage myself even more and dive deeper!

I always enjoy going to different beaches and watching the surfers in action. From atop Burleigh Hill, you get a perfect view of the surfers, waves, and the city skyline.

Australia’s beaches are iconic, with breaks and waves that attract people worldwide, and they are painted with a picture-perfect, postcard-worthy view. When I finally held onto a surfboard myself, it was clear why so many dedicate their lives to this sport. Surfing is a physically demanding activity, but it’s also mental and spiritual. You’re constantly challenged by the ocean, learning to read its movements and respect its power.

After wiping out countless times, I knew you don’t conquer waves; you work with them. It makes one appreciate the many surfers that go out at all different times of the day and make it look effortless. Knowing the amount of effort they are putting in is critical to embracing and respecting the surf culture, especially here on the Gold Coast.

It is a simple pleasure to always see the beaches filled with surfboards, waiting for their owners to take them out into the ocean to catch the perfect wave.

My first surf lesson was a reality check. I went into it with optimism, thinking I’d be able to catch a wave or two with some instruction. But what followed was a series of wipeouts, constant paddling, and saltwater stinging my eyes. Staying balanced while paddling felt like trying to stand on a rolling log, and getting into position for a wave was more complicated than I ever imagined. By the end, I was exhausted but had a newfound respect for the athleticism it takes to stay on the board.

Despite the initial struggle, I felt an adrenaline rush every time I got close to standing up. Those brief seconds of balance showed me that surfing is an art, demanding skill, patience, and adaptability. Watching seasoned surfers easily handle the waves made me realize how much practice goes into making it look effortless. Try after try, I suddenly got the hang of it and started to gain gratitude for moving quickly and standing up on the board as the wave pushed behind me. When standing up on the board, time freezes, and you are just enjoying the moment.

My surf class from Bond University is getting ready to take on the swell!

My friends from TEAN and my uni are super excited to get into the water and try to surf some waves! Hang loose and have fun!

While studying at Bond University, I took a course, “Gold Coast Surf, Culture, & Storytelling,” which I am a part of. We were also allowed to have a surf lesson at Burleigh. This time was far more challenging than the first, for we were susceptible to four-foot surf and limited space because the class size was larger. I got more beat up by the waves, but because I lacked a teacher directly helping me, it helped me improve my connection with the ocean. I started to learn the ways of the waves and practiced timing when to try to catch the waves rather than needing guidance.

Our surf instructor took this after our private lesson, where we both shredded some gnarly waves. The smiles illustrate how well we did despite the day’s harsh conditions.

After a short holiday, I returned to the Gold Coast, and the first thing I had planned was a private surf lesson with one other friend from TEAN. We were battling the tricky currents and strong winds that day, but the wave conditions were pristine for beginners. Surprisingly, I surfed as if I had been surfing for quite a while now, even impressing the guide. There wasn’t a time when I was surfing the white water that I did not stand up.

With my improved skills, I focused on refining my turns—dropping to one knee, leaning into the curve, and standing again, building my confidence and balance. Shockingly again, I could do so, and for the first time, I could proudly say I knew how to surf. It was something I never thought I’d accomplish, and yet, here I was, riding waves in Australia, part of a culture I had only once admired from afar.

Moving from one sunshine state to the next, I ditched my sunny, hot beachfront campus in St. Petersburg, Florida, and flew across the world to Australia. Instantly, I fell for the glow of the Gold Coast and lusted for this new kind of sunshine. Although the sunrises are magnificent on the east coast of Florida, I am positioned on the west. Gifted with numerous breathtaking sunsets on the Gulf of Mexico, I am extremely fortunate to have been blessed with beautiful endings to my days.

But wth a new mindset and a fresh start in Australia, I grew excited about the possibility of having those beautiful views to begin my days rather than end them. What better way to begin each day than a face full of sunshine and endless smiles?

With the blinds cracked open, the first peak of light gleams into my room, and I start to slowly awaken from my deep sleep. Before I know it, I’m fully woken up by the piercing noise of my alarm, a sharp reminder to get out of bed to start my day. Recently, this has been falling just after 5 a.m., so coffee will be needed.

I quickly scramble around, throwing on a matching workout set and debating whether today’s walk calls for sneakers or Birkenstocks—though either way, I’ll end up with sandy soles from the beach. Last, I reach for a light sweatshirt to wear in guard of the crisp morning, anticipating to take it off as the sun’s warmth takes over. As soon as I am done, I dash towards the door, out onto the streets with all of the other early risers.

Why would you want to live anywhere else, when you can live on the Gold Coast … that was my theory.” This quote speaks for itself, and I couldn’t agree more! It is found in Broadbeach on the pathway near the Surf Life Saving Club.

The Gold Coast wakes up with intent. As I make my way to the beach, I pass by numerous groups. Surfers with their boards under their arms making their way to the beach with eyes fixated on the waves. Walkers, joggers, and runners on the sidewalks, headphones on, ready to indulge in some exercise to fully wake up. Then there are the beach walkers, like me, who use the sound of the ocean as their morning soundtrack and have come for the sole purpose of seeing the sun’s rays peer over the horizon. Some days, I head out solo; others, I meet up with my friend from my TEAN group, but no matter the company, people, or waves, the Gold Coast is alive.

A guaranteed good walk is to Surfers Paradise. I suggest walking on the beach on the way there and then taking the pathway on the way back. My usual walk can sometimes be up to almost 4 miles! The views are beautiful, and you are surrounded by like-minded people.

Sometimes, depending on my schedule, I sit down in the sand and focus my attention on the brave surfers who chose to go out and patiently wait for the perfect wave. There is just something so calming about watching them float out in the water, completely at ease with the waves and tide. It reminds me of life here, relaxed but always in motion.

I begin my walk against the shoreline, with my head facing down, making sure I don’t pass by a beautiful shell or piece of sea glass. Everyone on the beach walking, jogging, running, sitting—even the dogs—is sharing the same peaceful moment and greeting each other with a smile. Clearly, the beach has become more than just a place on the Gold Coast; it has fabricated itself into a lifestyle—one that I love and strive to be a part of.

Four local surfers went out to catch some waves during peak sunrise and paddled their way into the golden glow cast over the ocean.

Elk Espresso, located in Broadbeach, is my personal favorite coffee shop/cafe near my apartment. Huge fan of their cinnamon latte—hot or iced, both are good—or their strawberry matcha.

The fresh breeze from the ocean gently mixes with the aroma of coffee steaming from multiple local cafes. Those cafes will soon be all the buzz with lines out the door as the morning crew awaits their ultimate energy supply. There’s something so calming about the sunrise and feeling grounded on the beach with the sand under your feet, just feeling yourself breathing in and out.

The quiet vibe dissipates as the sun rises higher, and the energy grows for the day to begin. After all of this, I feel ready to take on each day with the level of chill that all Aussies seem to have. So, my suggestion to anyone who wants to feel like they belong on the Gold Coast is to wake up early and let your golden day begin with some sunshine!
