This state is full of history, adventure, plants and animals, waterfalls, destinations and culture and part of the country you don’t want to miss out on if you want to really discover Australia. The respect and richness of the land is well portrayed in indigenous drawings and the area’s environmental studies. The Northern Territory holds Australia’s most vibrant Indigenous culture and plethora of diverse landscapes and species. The “Top End” is home to these seven lovable destinations and characteristics.

Beautiful Waterfalls

If one of your dreams is to swim under a waterfall amidst gorgeous scenery, clear water and potentially alongside a freshwater crocodile, Wangi Falls is the place for you. These waterfalls are located in Litchfield National Park and are best as a destination in the wet season. There is even a one mile walk to the top of the waterfalls, where you will probably spot fruit bats hiding in the trees if you look hard enough.

Another beautiful spot to visit in the Northern Territory, Edith Falls | Photo by TEAN Alum Michaela Kaplan

Aboriginal Culture

If you want to really experience the history of aboriginal culture, Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Kakadu National Park displays artifacts and stories illustrating different traditions throughout the years. The gallery offers local artworks, Aboriginal crafts, traditional music and much more. Additionally located in Kakadu National Park, the Marrawuddi Gallery displays and sells a variety of paintings on paper and bark, woodwork, fiber work, books and more in this indigenous-owned enterprise.

Learning about Aboriginal Culture | TEAN Alum Emily Rubin, Purdue University

Northern Territory Wildlife Park

This park has the widest diversity of animals I have ever seen in one place. With wetlands, monsoon vine forest and woodlands, this park hosts a number of aquatic species, including turtles and saltwater crocs, billabong species, including water monitors and wallabies, along with aviary species and even nocturnal species, including flying squirrels and various invertebrates.

Litchfield National Park

In addition to the Wangi and Florence Falls, this National Park is home to various swimming holes, monsoon rainforests, termite mounds, historic sites and rainforest. Located nearby is Mount Bundy Station where you’re surrounded by a tranquil farm experience and likely jumping wallabies in the morning.

Crocodiles

If you have ever wanted to see a crocodile’s insane ability to jump within three feet of you, don’t miss this cruise. Moving along the Adelaide River, your tour guide will not hesitate to make sure you see how much these crocodiles love lunchtime.

Kakadu National Park

An expedition to the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park should consist of hiking, various overlooks (Nawurlandja), billabongs, rock wallabies, crocodiles at the east alligator river, Ubirr aboriginal rock art, mamukala wetland, Beatrice Hill, spectacular scenery, and distinct plants and animals. This park will familiarize you with the spiritual and ecological ties of Aboriginal culture with the landscape.

Kakadu National Park | Photo by Dr. Rosalie Chapple, faculty for the Australian Summer Wildlife course with TEAN

Kata Tjuta National Park

This national park, like much of Australia, highlights Aboriginal perspectives of the Australian landscape and its importance to this ancient land. The park is home to the world-renowned sandstone monolith, Uluru, which is 348 meters in height and boldly displays various inscriptions made by ancestors of the Northern Territory of Australia.

“Our group went for a midday hike through Kata Tjuta. Fortunately, there are many simple things you can do to save some cash and make your money go further.

1. Public transportation

Skip the Uber or taxi and join the locals on public transportation. This is not only a great way to save money, but it is also an easy way to learn how to navigate your new hometown. You will find taking advantage of trains, buses, light rail or ferries to get around is a breeze and more budget friendly. For even more savings, check to see if there are student specials for the local transportation card. For example, students on the Gold Coast can receive a concession (student rate) as study abroad students.

“The iconic symbol of Sydney, Australia: the world famous Opera House. I always got a great view of this beauty on the ferry ride across the harbor from Manly to Circular Quay.” | TEAN Alum Michaela Miller, Otterbein University

2. Weekly Budget

A great way to save is to create a weekly budget. A simple way to budget while still being flexible is to take a certain amount of cash out at the beginning of the week and use only that amount for all your expenses – public transportation, food, entertainment and household items. You don’t need to keep track of every little purchase or what you spent money on, but can simply look at the amount of cash you have left.

3. Use your TEAN Network

Your included Cairns Orientation and Great Barrier Reef Excursion with TEAN is a great way to jump start your study abroad adventure and meet others studying all over Australia. Keep in touch with the friends you meet during orientation – when you’re traveling around Australia you might have the opportunity to reach out and stay with them. One of the great things about Australia is how accessible traveling is. If you walk down a main street in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth you can’t miss all of the tour companies and travel agencies.
Explore TEAN’s Australia Study Abroad Programs

TEAN Orientation in Cairns – a great opportunity to meet others studying all over Australia

4. Use your Student ID

Always carry your Australian university student ID with you. If you’re interning abroad, make sure to pack your home university’s student ID. There are often discounts for university students. Most tourist attractions offer a student rate which makes it easier to see all the sites and not pay an outrageous amount. It also never hurts to ask if there are student rates for textbooks, takeaway food, entertainment or travel.

5. Cooking at home

The majority of the TEAN housing options both on and off-campus include access to a kitchen. This will allow you to cook meals for yourself or as a group. Try taking turns cooking dinner for all the roommates – it’s a great bonding experience and helps to save money during the week so you can splurge more for the weekends.

Worth the weekend splurge. Get a Job

Australia pays a living wage – not a minimum wage – which is helpful for students looking for casual work. You are allowed to work 40 hours per fortnight on your student visa. Getting a job as a barista or server is a great way to make a little extra spending money. If you are interested in working, reach out to your Resident Director and they will be able to offer some advice on finding a job abroad in your location.

7. Free Events

Each month your local TEAN staff will send you a “What’s on” email with recommended events happening in your city. These are events around town that are inexpensive or even FREE! Throughout the semester TEAN will also plan events for you to attend. These events can range from an Australian League Football match to an introductory surfing lesson. Along with getting to know Australia better, one of the best things about the TEAN cultural events is that they are completely free.

An included TEAN Cultural Event – AFL (Aussie Rules Football) Match in Brisbane

8. Buy books (and other items) second hand

Don’t spend top dollar on all new textbooks. Most universities have a process to buy and sell used textbooks, usually via a Facebook group, like the “Bond Textbook Exchange” Facebook group. For other items, the Australian equivalent to craigslist is gumtree.com. Browsing Gumtree listings is a great way to buy a bicycle, surf board, etc. and sell them again before you leave.

It’s true that studying and living in Australia can be pricey, but there are still plenty of ways to save money while still making the most of your time in the country! Don’t let that fact put you off studying abroad in the Land Down Under however! There are plenty of ways to manage and even lower your study abroad costs in Australia, from carefully choosing your housing to even selecting a program with lowered tuition rates.

We’ve been offering study abroad programs in Australia for more than two decades and over the years have created a wide range of programs, locations and housing options to suit different budgets. Read on to see how you can choose an affordable Australia study abroad program.

Consider the Location

A big thing to take into account when choosing your Australia study abroad program is the location. The cost of living can vary greatly from city to city and, just like in the United States, the cost of living in a larger city like Sydney or Melbourne will be higher than a smaller town. You’ll find living costs will be less expensive in places like Townsville and Newcastle, so if you want to save some cash you may want to consider heading to a smaller city.

View over a Townsville – a great pick for a more affordable location in Australia

Shorten the Program Length

A full semester in Australia may not be feasible for all students, however TEAN offers a variety of programs that run for varying lengths of time. For example, students can participate in an 8-week Summer internship in Australia or a 3-week summer study abroad program like Australian Environment, Wildlife and Conservation, Sports and Exercise Psychology or Contemporary Issues in Public Health. Choosing a shorter program is one way to cut down the cost of housing and program fees, but still get the experience of studying and living in Australia.
Explore TEAN’s Australia Summer Programs

Compare Housing Options

Make sure to look at all housing options to see which will best fit your needs and budget. Do the on-campus accommodations offer a meal plan? Will living on campus mean you don’t need to pay for daily public transportation? Opting for shared accommodations will also be less expensive.

For example, the University of Newcastle offers on-campus accommodations, which allow students to opt into a 16 meals per week meal plan and single room accommodations. Alternatively, the off-campus accommodations have a shared kitchen (meaning you could save some money cooking for yourself…or spend more by always going out to eat!) and require students to take public transportation to get the the university. It’s still easy to get to campus (and the beach!) but there is an added cost.

In Sydney TEAN offers a range of housing to suit various lifestyle preferences and budgets. Review our comparison of TEAN’s Sydney study abroad housing options.

TEAN Off-Campus Beach Housing has a full kitchen and requires a commute to campus

Save Money on Tuition

There are some schools in Australia where you can take a reduced 3-course load (instead of four) and save money on your tuition costs. You will need to make sure you are approved by your home university to take three courses, but this can mean up to a couple thousand in savings at specific schools that offer the tuition break. We’ve written up an entire article on what schools offer the lowered tuition option.

Science and Engineering Building at QUT – you can take 3 courses for a tuition discount of up to $1,875

Regardless of where you study, there are a lot of factors to take into consideration to choose the right location for you including what courses are offered and how credits will transfer to your home university. Of course, money is a major factor too, but rest assured that with a little research and flexibility there are ways to lower the cost of studying abroad in Australia.

Explore study abroad programs in Australia now!

The post How to Pick an Affordable Australia Study Abroad Program appeared first on TEAN.

Studying Marine Life on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia

TEAN Alum

Australia

TEAN Alum

Townsville

Living in Townsville

Study Abroad Australia

James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville, Australia is unique in its close proximity to the … Read more

The post Studying Marine Life on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia appeared first on TEAN.

James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville, Australia is unique in its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and strong educational focus on tropical ecosystem health and biodiversity. As a marine biology major from New York, the opportunity to study conservation, ecology and marine physiology on the Great Barrier Reef was an incredible opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I had always wanted to visit Australia, and studying abroad at JCU provided the chance to take courses not offered at my home institution while also being able to experience all that the country had to offer.

George Robert’s Hall, one of the dorms on campus at JCU

During my semester I was enrolled in four courses: Australian Vertebrate Fauna, Evolution and Ecology of Reef Fishes, Life History and Evolution of Reef Corals, and Conserving Marine Wildlife: Sea Mammals, Birds, Reptiles. Before enrolling, I was advised that Australian courses were more intense than American courses, and that the workload would be strenuous, but I didn’t let that deter me from taking the courses I wanted to take. That being said – the classes were tough. In Australia, courses often only have only a few, but significant, assignments that are worth a large percentage of your grade and the final exam is also worth considerably more than for classes back home.
Ask a Question about this Program

Drawing of fish head anatomy, labeled with the different bones and joints

The Australian students at JCU were obviously used to this system, while international students like myself, who make up a high proportion of the marine biology program, struggled more. I was surprised to see that all of my classes were attended by a mix of undergrads and graduate students, but unsurprisingly most of the graduate students were international.

Rockfish

While the coursework was difficult, the labs and the field trips were more than worth it. Three of my four courses had weekly labs where we studied coral and reef fish physiology, worked with population models and practiced identifying different marine species to prepare us to go out in the field. In one lab, we were challenged to recreate a fish skull by starting with the full head, removing the flesh and then reconnecting all of the bones.

Our finished project, a needlefish skull. These types of field trips offered truly unforgettable experiences while also giving us practical field experience.

Group photo with headlamps, preparing to go into the riverbed to look for frogs at Wambiana

Studying abroad at JCU offered the amazing opportunity to be totally immersed in Australia’s wildlife, and for that I will forever be grateful.

Tiare Fridrich is a Marine Biology and Wildlife Conservation Biology major at University of Rhode Island, she studied abroad at James Cook University with TEAN in Townsville, Australia.

The post Studying Marine Life on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia appeared first on TEAN.

6 Dessert Spots in Sydney You’ve Gotta Try

TEAN Alum

Australia

Sydney

TEAN Alum

Living in Sydney

Study Abroad Australia

Sydney has some to-die-for dessert places. It’s hard to choose, but here are six of the best…

Max Brenner

A must-try experience for all the chocoholics out there! Max Brenner Chocolate Bar is the definition of a classy dessert experience. With a wide variety of desserts and chocolate concoctions from all over the world, I don’t think there is a single person who couldn’t find something they love at Max Brenner. I definitely suggest making a meal of your dessert as the creations are not only incredibly rich and filling, but portion sizes are massive.

Donut Time

I had an amazing time in Sydney and there are many things that I miss about being in the city… Donut Time being one of those things. This place is absolutely amazing! Whether you are a donut lover or not, you will appreciate the pure Instagram worthiness of these delicious donuts. My personal favorite was the Slim Shady but you honestly couldn’t go wrong with any of them.

N2 Extreme Gelato

This place is an experience in itself. Designed to look like a chemistry lab, the workers (dressed in lab coats) use liquid nitrogen to create tasty and original gelato treats. While it may be a bit on the pricier side, it’s definitely worth it. With a menu that changes every two weeks, you definitely want to check out their Instagram (which is awesome) before you go to make sure there is a flavor you will like…not that you will ever have any trouble finding one!

Tella Balls

As a Nutella fanatic, I had heard of Tella Balls before the thought of studying abroad in Australia even crossed my mind. The divine dessert bar in Dulwich Hill offers a variety of different treats but is most notable for their never-ending menu of Nutella desserts! From Nutella waffles and milkshakes to Nutella flavored ice cream served in donut cones, Tella Balls has everything a Nutella fan could dream of.

i-Creamy

If you were to pass by i-Creamy, you would think it’s just your average gelato shop, but that is definitely not the case. The workers of i-Creamy are true artists, capable of turning your gelato into floral masterpieces, which taste just as good as they look. Whether you’re a bonafide foodie or simply love to share aesthetically pleasing food on social media, i-Creamy is the place for you.

Emperor’s Garden Cake and Bakery

Located in Sydney’s Chinatown, Emperor’s Garden sells a variety of baked goods and sweet treats. Sold out of one of the shop’s windows are the world’s BEST cream puffs! Need I say more? Made fresh – you literally watch them being made – Emperor’s Garden cream puffs are the ultimate cheap treat.

Kate Den Houter is a TEAN Alum and student at Michigan State University. Just hop on the train in Sydney and in a few hours, you will reach Katoomba, a small mountain town with some great restaurants and awesome site seeing. There are a ton of different hikes you can take to see a bunch of different views in the Blue Mountains. I suggest taking the Charles Darwin Trail. It is more of a walk than a hike and you pass a couple of waterfalls during it. The trail takes you to a massive waterfall and in the surrounding area there are many different outlooks to see the MOST INCREDIBLE views you will ever see in your life. From there you can either take the Charles Darwin trail back out or proceed on a somewhat challenging multiple hour hike on which you pass many more views and waterfalls. I suggest taking the Charles Darwin Trail back out and then revisiting Katoomba Falls the next day. Be prepared there are A LOT of stairs. Also make sure you check out The Three Sisters, an iconic spot in Australia. You can walk to the lookout from the center of town and even walk into one of the sisters.

The Twelve Apostles

Take a trip down the Great Ocean Road and enjoy and incredible view of the 12 Apostles, another iconic spot in Australia. It for sure isn’t convenient, you will have to pay for a tour bus to take you there but I highly recommend it. The main destination is the 12 Apostles but along the way you stop along The Great Ocean Road to see breath taking views, eat lunch, and maybe even spot a kangaroo and koala. We arrived at the 12 Apostles just before sun set and ended up seeing the sun set which was just amazing. Take the time to walk around to all the different lookouts and even walk down the rickety staircase to the beach. If you are there at sunset as well and it is a clear day you will have some of the most stunning photos.

Hosier Lane

I am not a city person at all however, Melbourne was my favorite city I have EVER visited. After taking a walk down Hosier Lane I fell in love and I am sure you will to. Hosier lane is a little side street that is filled the most vibrant street art. The artwork ranges from political statements to funny pictures of cats and is breathtaking and a little overwhelming. Take the time to walk around and look at it all. While there I got the opportunity to talk to some of the artists and learn how to spray paint and leave my mark on Hosier Lane. Street artist have their own culture, take the time to learn about it if the opportunity is there.

Photo by TEAN Alum Melissa Pesarchick, Quinnipiac University

Caves Beach

Located in NSW just a short drive from the city of Newcastle. If you are looking for a place to adventure to this is the perfect choice. Make sure you go at low tide and you will be able to walk in and out of numerous beach caves. There are rocky points you can walk out on and look back at the beach and get a view of the caves from the beach. You can also go inside the caves and get a unique view of the ocean, a view I’m sure you have never seen anything quite like. After adventuring through the caves, sit back and relax on the beach. The day I went there was barely anyone on the beach. We brought food and drinks and had ourselves a day, swimming, adventuring and just having a good day.

Byron Bay

Byron Bay was by far my favorite place in Australia. Whenever someone asks me about my experience, my favorite part, or where to go my first response is simply, “Byron Bay”. I love everything about this place so I could go on forever. While the beach right next to town is awesome, go to Tallows bay. You look at the beach right in downtown and it is packed with people but head over to Tallows and it is so wide and long that you can feel like you are the only one there. This is the beach where the surfing happens and if you are lucky you might even get to see some dolphins. Byron has unique nightlife. Personally, I don’t enjoy going to clubs I would rather go to a bar and have it be more of a local feel. That is Byron nightlife. We went to this little shack called Woody’s and enjoyed amazing live music. This is how most bars in Byron are so adventure to all of them, each one is unique and super fun. Miss Margarita. I am a lover of Mexican food and I searched high and low for a good Mexican place while abroad. Miss Margarita was SO good and my top suggestion of places to eat in Byron.

Sarah Davis is a TEAN Alum and student at University of New Hampshire. Although Australian beaches may look amazing, they can be unpredictable and have some facts every visitor should be aware of. Here are some helpful tips to help you with beach safety in Australia.

Swim Between the Flags

The surf life savers (lifeguards) put up red and yellow flags to show you the supervised area. Beaches have changing conditions, so it can also be quite unpredictable and dangerous to swimmers who are unaware of the hazards. That’s why the life savers who understand the beach use a system of flags and signs to advise the us on the things we need to know. The most important flags on the beach are the red and yellow flags. These show the supervised area of the beach and that a lifeguard is nearby for your safety. If there are no red and yellow flags, you should not go swimming. Safety signs are also put in place to warn you about the permanent and occasional hazards that are present in the environment. Some are put into place each day by the lifeguards to show you hazards present on that day in a specific location such as rip currents which can move from place to place on different days or beach closings. Keep your eyes peeled for these!

Be Sun Smart

Australia and New Zealand have the highest incidence and mortality rates of melanoma in the world, according to Australia’s Department of Health and Aging. Being smart about UV protection, is essential anywhere but especially while in Australia. You will be constantly reminded while you are here to be putting on sun screen, covering up and being aware of the time you’re spending in the sun. You can find some more tips on how to be safe in the sun from Cancer Council Australia.

Watch out for Rips

Rip Curl isn’t just your brand of board shorts! The most important thing to remember is that often the safest and calmest area long the beach is where you’ll find a rip. This is the area avoid of wave activity and appears darker and often times deceptively calm. All the water that comes in via the waves then has to go out somehow, that is what a rip is. If you get caught in a rip, do not panic. Float and raise one arm as a distress signal when possible. See which direction the rip is taking you, is it straight out or at an angle? Once you have determined this, and if you have the energy, swim parallel to the direction of the flow and never against it. Some rips can move at 3 times the speed of an Olympic swimmer, you won’t win. If you cannot swim out to either side of the rip, just go with it. Most rips won’t take you out very far, and will usually spit you out not long after they take you, so keep calm and save your energy for the swim back to shore.

Watch Weather Conditions

Waves are one of the most enjoyable features of the ocean in Australia! You can ride them, jump over them, dive under them, simply watch then gently roll in, or gasp as they crash and roar during a big swell. Different conditions affect waves and it’s important to understand how the waves work, what types of waves may be present when you visit, and how you can deal with them to reduce the potential for injury. When surfing, the most important thing to do is to follow all safety warnings and signage. If in doubt, don’t go out.

Whitney Wemett is a TEAN Alum and recent graduate of Stonehill College. The challenging, beautiful, scenic Mount Warning hike. This trek is approximately five hours total from the top and bottom, so be prepared for a long day of sweat and exercise, but it’s all worth it for the incredible views at the top.

To have a successful Mount Warning hike, be sure to bring water and snacks for rewarding yourself once you reach the top. What better way to enjoy a PB&J while you’re staring at this view? Be prepared for at least two hours of walking to get to the top but don’t shy away from stopping to look at the views on the way, they’ll getcha.

Be aware that the last hour of the hike isn’t a hike… it’s a climb. This was actually my favorite part of the hike because it was more challenging. The closer you get to the top, the steeper it gets so you have to use a chain provided on the rocks to navigate up the path safely. Make sure you’re wearing proper footwear (hiking boots or well gripped sneakers) or this part of the hike won’t end well. The higher you get, the colder it gets thus; make sure you wear proper attire. I recommend wearing layers so you can strip down if necessary.

Last but not least, do not forget a camera! You aren’t going to want to miss capturing the astounding views at the top. Don’t bring anything too heavy though because again, it is a five-hour hike. I recommend using your iPhone’s and/or GoPro cameras. Put everything in a light backpack, grab a couple friends to keep you busy, and get ready for one of the best hikes of your life!

For more info on visiting Mount Warning, please visit the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website.

Michaela Kaplan is a TEAN Alum and student at the University of Florida, she studied abroad on the Gold Coast, Australia.

The post Climbing Mount Warning appeared first on TEAN.

3 Reasons to Study Abroad in Australia

TEAN Alum

Australia

TEAN Alum

Study Abroad Australia

When I decided to study abroad, I was faced with more than 190 different choices. … Read more

The post 3 Reasons to Study Abroad in Australia appeared first on TEAN.

When I decided to study abroad, I was faced with more than 190 different choices. However, when my plane landed in Australia, I knew that I had made the right choice. This country possesses attributes that are unique in our world, and make it the perfect place for an once-in-a-lifetime experience. Here are my top 3 reasons for studying abroad in Australia.

The Culture

In Australia, everyone is your friend. They accept people as-is with open arms. Even before I had set foot off of the plane, I had a business card from a Sydney man and an offer to spend the night at a home in Melbourne. Australia. Similar to the United States, Australia is a nation of immigrants and mixed cultures. No matter who you are or where you come from, you have a place here. Strangers here will talk with you for hours if you let them, and will end up becoming your best friend.

Hanging out with friends in Sydney | Hannah Schube, DePaul University

Variety of Adventures

When looking at places to study, I wanted it all. I wanted to surf in the morning, explore a forest in the afternoon and spend the night in a bustling downtown market. As I found, it is not only possible here; it is easy. The continent is a vast, varied and vibrant place. It ranges from tropical rain forests and pristine beaches to snow-capped mountains and expansive deserts. Of course there is skydiving, mountaineering and scuba diving here, but there are also uniquely Australian adventures. I have explored million year-old forests and stayed on an island made completely out of sand. It’s amazing to do all of that within one country.

Learning to Surf – a great adventure to have on your bucket list while in Australia

The Wildlife

They might look like living teddy bears, but don’t confuse these adorable creatures for bears. Koalas are marsupials, and uniquely Australian. Australia has quite a few animals not found anywhere else in the world. Aside from Koalas, there are Kangaroos, Wallabies, Tasmanian Devils, hundreds of colorful bird species and exotic sea life. When surfing at certain beaches, it isn’t uncommon to see a pod of dolphins playing near the shore, or a whale breaching the surface in the distance. I see Australia as the world’s best open space animal reserve.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane | Ashley Ellsworth, California Polytechnic State University

If this hasn’t been enough to convince you, I will add one more thing – the bacon is huge. That alone was enough to get me interested. So make the most out of your time abroad, and come to a place unlike anywhere else in the world.

James Jolly is a TEAN Alum and student at Drake University.
