TEAN is committed to giving students a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience studying abroad in a new and exciting culture. We recognize that in many instances additional funding is necessary to make the study abroad experience both affordable and realistic. These supplemental scholarships were devised as an attempt to help students with the financial commitments required for an international education experience.

TEAN provides numerous scholarships, including an annual full ride scholarship, need- and merit-based scholarships, diversity scholarships, even a photography scholarship, plus others. See below for available scholarships.

TEAN Full Ride Scholarship

TEAN Full Ride Scholarship

The Education Abroad Network Full Ride Scholarship is designed to give a stand-out student the opportunity to study abroad. Studying abroad is a personal journey and the winning applicant will show us not only the journey they’ve been on to arrive at this point, but also the journey they envision studying abroad will entail. The scholarship can be used for any Summer or Fall TEAN program and covers tuition, program fees, orientation and housing (up to $26,000 value). REQUIREMENTS
  • Students must have their study abroad office complete the Statement from University document in order to be considered for the scholarship. You can either do this on your TEAN online application for the program, or use this PDF version if you haven’t applied online for the program yet.
  • Must meet the GPA and eligibility requirements for the individual program that they want to attend.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the United States.
  • Students can only apply for the scholarship once per application cycle, applicants should select their top program choice when applying for the scholarship.
  • Disbursement can only be applied towards total program fees. Cash disbursements will not be made under any circumstances.
  • Scholarship applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
SELECTION CRITERIA
  • Will be based on the overall application materials, including a personal essay and overall presentation.
  • Applications will be judged by a panel of TEAN staff members.
  • To be considered for the Full Ride Scholarship you must meet the above requirements.
  • Assessment will be based on the merit of the individual applicants judged by the following: excellence in academics, active participation in extra-curricular activities, achievement in leadership skills, awareness of the value of international education, and a one-page essay addressing the following question: “Why have you selected this location and program? How is it tied to your major?”

Need, Merit and Diversity scholarships range between $500 – $2,500 and can only be used on TEAN programs. Completing the application is not a guarantee for a scholarship award. Students may only apply for one scholarship (ie. Need, Merit or Diversity) so we encourage students to apply for the scholarship that they feel they best qualify for.

Merit-Based Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to award those who have not only achieved academic excellence but have served as leaders and role models within their community.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be accepted into a TEAN semester program. Students may not apply for the scholarship before they are formally accepted into a TEAN program.
  • Must download the TEAN Scholarship Approval Form to be completed by a Study Abroad or Academic Advisor before the deadline. This must be emailed to scholarships@teanabroad.org directly from the person who writes it.
  • Must provide a letter of recommendation from a source that is familiar with the student’s academic background (professor, academic advisor, guidance counselor, etc.).   • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 GPA or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student.

Need-Based Scholarships

The purpose of this scholarship is to award those who have achieved academic excellence, demonstrated community involvement and require extra financial assistance.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be accepted into a TEAN semester program. Students may not apply for the scholarship before they are formally accepted into a TEAN program.
  • Must download the TEAN Scholarship Approval Form to be completed by a Study Abroad or Academic Advisor before the deadline. This must be emailed to scholarships@teanabroad.org directly from the advisor completing the form.
  • Must provide a letter of recommendation from a source that is familiar with the student’s academic background (professor, academic advisor, guidance counselor, etc.). Further information provided in the above Scholarship Approval Form. This letter must be emailed to scholarships@teanabroad.org directly from the person who writes it.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 GPA or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student.
  • Applicants must currently receive financial aid from a U.S. college or university or other independent source (parental loans, personal loans, etc.).
  • Applicants must show proof of financial need by completing TEAN’s Financial Aid Form. Form to be completed by a financial aid officer at the student’s home university or college. This form must be emailed to scholarships@teanabroad.org directly from the person who completes it.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Diversity Scholarships

The purpose of this scholarship is to award those who have overcome extreme adversity due to gender, race, sexuality, religion or other underrepresented groups in study abroad (ex. first generation college students).

REQUIREMENTS

Any student who has received the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship will have the opportunity to receive a $500 Gilman Bonus Scholarship from TEAN.

University of Auckland Scholarships

University of Auckland Scholarships

TEAN has partnered with the University of Auckland to offer unique scholarship opportunities for students choosing to study in New Zealand at the University of Auckland. The Choose Earth scholarship is for students focusing in the fields of environmental science and sustainability while the People and Place scholarship is for students who are studying indigenous studies.

Application Deadlines

Spring (February-June): November 15

Awards are generally announced on the following dates:
Spring Scholarships – announced in mid-December and awarded in mid-March
Fall Scholarships – announced mid-June and awarded in late July

The scholarship funds will not be disbursed until the end of the add/drop period at the University of Auckland when we will be able to confirm the student’s final course enrollment.


Choose Earth Scholarship

The University of Auckland is committed to pursuing sustainability via environmental excellence both in and out of the classroom and this scholarship focuses on that initiative. The Faculty of Science Sustainability Network was established in 2015 and comprises staff from across the faculty who are working on projects to progress the university’s commitment to both environmental sustainability and positive, equitable human relationships. The Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Business also have Sustainability working groups. This aligns the University of Auckland with the TEAN core value of Choose Earth as both entities work toward a sustainable future.

Combining New Zealand’s global standing as a leader in the environment and conservation alongside the University of Auckland’s Top 100 Universities World ranking ensures a dynamic location to study. The purpose of this scholarship is to award students who have an academic focus on the environment and sustainability. There are two USD$2,000 scholarships available for the Spring (Feb-July) semester and one USD$2,000 scholarship available for the Fall (July-Nov).

Requirements
  • Must meet the University of Auckland entrance requirements including a 3.0 minimum GPA.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student and have completed at least two semesters.
  • Must be majoring in a field related to environmental science/management or sustainability.
  • Must enroll in two classes at the University of Auckland relating to the environment or sustainability.

People & Place Scholarship

Indigenous Studies is a growing field that promotes and values diverse international indigenous perspectives in a changing global environment. Te Wānanga o Waipapa is the School of Māori Studies and Pacific Studies located in the University of Auckland’s Arts Faculty. The University of Auckland is ranked number 28 globally in Arts and Humanities ensuring a solid base to explore the culture of New Zealand. The staff of Te Wānanga o Waipapa include nationally and internationally acclaimed researchers and experts in the Māori and Pacific worlds. They actively support Māori and Pacific development by promoting and advancing the knowledge of Te Ao Māori and Pacific world views through their teaching and research.

The purpose of this scholarship is to award students who have a focus on indigenous studies. There are two USD$2,000 scholarships available for the Spring (Feb-July) semester and one USD$2,000 scholarship available for the Fall (July-Nov) semester. In addition to the monetary awards, there are 8 unique Waka excursions that will be awarded. The students who are awarded the $2,000 will also receive the Waka excursion.

Waka excursion

Students who are awarded the Waka excursion will spend four hours on the Auckland Harbour in a Waka (traditional Maori canoe) learning and experiencing first hand the history and culture of the Maori and Pacific peoples. Maori guides will provide stories passed down from their ancestors and will give students the opportunity to sail the traditional Maori canoes in this unique, educational and fun opportunity.

  • Must meet the University of Auckland entrance requirements including a 3.0 minimum GPA.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student and have completed at least two semesters.
  • Must be majoring in a field related to indigenous studies, anthropology, sociology, or history.

Semester in Shanghai Scholarships

Chinese Language Study Abroad Scholarships

This scholarship is for a student who is applying for our semester-long study abroad program at Fudan University and has taken at least one semester of Chinese language. The winning applicant will continue their language studies at Fudan or TEAN’s University of Virginia language program while abroad.

Requirements
  • Must be a participant on the TEAN Semester in Shanghai program. Students may apply for the scholarship before they are formally accepted into a TEAN program, but will not be awarded the scholarship until after they are formally accepted.
  • Must have taken at least one semester of Chinese language or be currently enrolled in Chinese language.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 GPA or higher.
  • Disbursement can only be applied toward total program fees. Cash disbursements will not be made under any circumstances.

Selection Criteria

Photography Scholarship

Photography Study Abroad Scholarship

This scholarship is for a study abroad applicant who is also a talented photographer. Semester scholarships are $500 and Summer program (program length must be 4 weeks or more) scholarships are $250.

The winning applicant will commit to documenting their semester abroad and submitting photographs to TEAN.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be accepted into a TEAN semester program. Students may not apply for the scholarship before they are formally accepted into a TEAN program.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student.
  • Disbursement can only be applied toward total program fees. Cash disbursements will not be made under any circumstances.
  • Must submit a digital portfolio of their photography with a minimum of 10 photos to be reviewed, as part of the application process.
  • If successful, the winning applicants will be required to sign a contract that outlines the expectations for documenting the semester and deadlines for submitting photos.
  • The scholarship winner(s) will own the copyright of submitted photos. Photographs that are submitted can be used by TEAN to promote TEAN programs in any and all media.
  • Scholarship applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
SELECTION CRITERIA
  • The winner(s) will be selected based on the application, short answers and photography portfolio. Applications will be judged by a panel of TEAN staff members.
  • To be considered for the Photography Scholarship students must meet the above requirements. Assessment will be based on the overall application and the digital portfolio that shows the applicant’s photography skills.

Summer in Seoul Scholarships

There are two scholarships provided by Korea University available for the TEAN Summer in Seoul program. One $2,000 award will be granted based on the merit and leadership of the applicant. One $1,000 award will be granted based on the financial need of the applicant.

  • Must be accepted into the Korea University International Summer Campus program through TEAN. Students may not apply for the scholarship before they are formally accepted into a TEAN program.
  • Must have a Statement from University form completed by a Study Abroad or Academic Advisor before the deadline.
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student.
  • Scholarship applications received after the April 15 deadline will not be considered.

Sequel scholarships are $500 and are for program participants who have formerly participated in another one of TEAN’s full semester study abroad programs.

We realize that extra financial assistance is necessary to participate in multiple study abroad programs within a college career. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize those students who have once again made the commitment to study abroad.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be accepted into a TEAN program (including any semester, summer, winter or internship program). Students may not apply for the scholarship before they are formally accepted into a TEAN program.
