One of the best parts about studying abroad in Wellington are all of the different markets this city hosts. Every weekend there are four different markets. On Friday is the night market, which boasts all types of specialty foods, and if you miss it, there is another one on Saturday. Saturday morning is the craft fair, the place to go for the most unique handmade goods. And on Sunday is the farmer’s market, where you can stock up on produce for the week.

Night Markets (Friday and Saturday Evening)

Located on the infamous Cuba Street, both of the night markets are the best places to get dinner on Friday and Saturday. Food trucks and stands line the walkway, and part of the experience is just walking back and forth looking at all of the options, watching as the food is made right in front of the customers.

You can fill any craving you might have; from savory to sweet, the options are endless. I recommend trying the Mexican food stand and for dessert the fried ice cream or waffle stands. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the booths; it’s my housemate’s and my goal to try as many of the trucks and stands as possible before we leave. These markets have the most exciting atmosphere; a great place to enjoy the end of a work or school week.

Craft Fair (Saturday Morning)

Every Saturday morning, located on the harbour, is a unique craft fair. If you are looking for hand crafted goods to bring home, this would be the place to go! From soaps and clothing, to jewelry and paintings, you can find a wide variety of matchless items that you won’t be able to find in a store. The craft fair is all under cover, so not even the rain can stop you from meandering through all of the booths.

Farmer’s Market (Sunday Morning)

On Sunday mornings be sure to get down to a farmer’s market, there is a smaller one where Vivian and Willis Streets meet and a larger one that is located right on the harbour. I love the one on the harbour, not only are there countless fresh produce stalls, but there are also stands selling homemade bread, hummus, and even eggs. And if you forgot to eat something before heading down to the harbour, food trucks are set up if you want a coffee, crepe, or even a full meal.

The farmer’s market fills an entire large parking lot with just produce, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

One of my favorite days since I’ve been in Wellington was one Sunday when my friends and I spent the majority of our morning and afternoon at the farmer’s market. We got our produce and ate lunch lying on the grass in the sun looking out onto the water; it was the perfect way to relax before the school week started up again. My last recommendation is to get to the farmer’s market as early as you can, that way you get the best selection when it comes to fruits and veggies!
