Choose Earth, Choose TEAN

Have you ever stopped to consider the impact your daily actions have on the environment? Are you curious about how you can make a meaningful and lasting contribution to a more sustainable future?

If you find yourself reflecting on questions like these but don’t know where to begin, look no further than the WorldStrides Choose Earth Micro-Credential. This program will equip you with the resources and skills you need to make a positive impact in your community in a way that aligns with your interests and passions. As a participant, you choose your sustainable impact, and we provide the structure to make that change happen.

Beginning spring of 2023, updates have been made to the micro-credential program to make it easier for anyone in an ISA/TEAN program to participate. We are excited to share that this semester we have already seen more engagement than in seasons prior!

The five outlined modules are specifically designed to cater to individuals of all levels of understanding, from those passionate about environmental justice and sustainability to those just beginning their journey. Each participant will have access to an array of learning materials, including the United Nations “Sustainability Development Goals, SDG, which are the basis and core of how WorldStrides seeks to help participants become responsible future leaders in sustainability.

The 5 modules are outlined as follows:

Sustainable Development

This module guides participants as they build upon their knowledge of sustainability to develop an understanding of what it means to be a responsible global citizen. Participants can learn from each other by completing discussion boards and researching a local environmental or social issue relevant to their program.

The Meaning of Sustainability

This module encourages participants to dig deeper into the effects their decisions have on the environment, focusing on how they can implement changes toward a more sustainable lifestyle.

Environmental Justice

Through various case studies, participants answer prompts that highlight the real-life experiences of diverse groups throughout the world. Environmental justice involves all of us, and participants learn to expand their perspectives to encompass many of these diverse realities.

Complete an Eco-Challenge

Now is the time for participants to take what they have learned and complete their own challenge toward sustainability. Each participant can choose their eco-challenge based on local opportunities for personal and community improvement. This is a hands-on activity that brings direct ecological benefits to the program site. There are endless ways to Choose Earth!

Putting it into Action

Participants spend time reflecting on their learning journey after a semester devoted to developing a sustainable mindset. They share these experiences with other Choose Earth participants because each journey is unique and personal. Participants can ponder on how they will take what they have learned and experienced to continually apply a sustainable mindset beyond their programs.

Choose Earth provides another incredible way for students to see beyond the classroom and to see the world- and themselves- in new ways. The Choose Earth Micro-credential is available to all Higher Ed students, and the Choose Earth Certificate will soon be available to participants in all other WorldStrides programs.
