When I told people I was studying abroad in Thailand, most imagined me lounging on tropical beaches all day. In reality, I’ve only managed a few beach trips during my semester here—but every one of them has been unforgettable.
Thailand’s coastline is split between two stunning regions: the Andaman Sea on the west and the Gulf of Thailand on the east. I’ve been lucky enough to explore both, and I’m excited to share my favorite spots with you!
Andaman Sea Adventures
Ao Nang, Krabi
Our TEAN orientation took place in the Krabi region, in the beachside town of Ao Nang.

Koh Lanta
A couple of us flew back down to the Krabi region and spent one relaxed night on Koh Lanta, a sprawling island that feels wonderfully slow-paced and local.

Koh Phi Phi
After Lanta, we went to Koh Phi Phi, which had a lively, touristy vibe, with the main beach just a five-minute walk from our hostel.
We were able to catch another lovely sunset—this time from the Phi Phi viewpoint that required a nearly vertical stair climb. But it was worth it!

Exploring the Gulf of Thailand
Koh Samet
On my solo trip to Koh Samet, I found a peaceful beach on the southeastern side, reachable only by scooter or taxi, adding a sense of adventure to the experience.

My second night in Samet, I scootered to the island’s west coast with some new friends I met at my hostel for sunset.

Beyond Thailand: Beaches in SURROUNDING Southeast Asia
Vietnam – Da Nang (South China Sea)
After traveling through northern Vietnam, the calm beaches near Hoi An felt like a welcome escape from the hustle of the cities. It was the perfect place to unwind.

Malaysia – Monkey Beach, Penang (Malacca Strait)
After a cheeky monkey encounter in Khao Sok (see my previous blog post!), I was hesitant about visiting Monkey Beach in Penang. But the name doesn’t disappoint—it’s home to countless playful monkey families and surrounded by lush national parkland.

Some of my favorite study abroad memories have happened in the ocean here. Every beach I’ve visited has added something special to my study abroad experience. These trips weren’t just about relaxation—they were opportunities to immerse myself in new cultures, connect with nature, meet new people, and create memories with friends that I’ll carry with me long after this journey ends.
