ORIENTATION EXcursion

Get ready for an exhilarating crash course in Kiwi living, plus a semester orientation with fellow TEAN students. Explore New Zealand’s rich culture and environments in Queenstown . You can expect an introduction to Māori culture and experience New Zealand’s natural beauty. After this packed five-day program, you’ll feel confident navigating all things Kiwi with a strong foundation on which to build your semester. 


Housing

TEAN places students into university housing with a choice of residential apartments or houses, all within a short walk of campus. While the university offers a range of housing options, TEAN recommends a couple of accommodation options that students have most enjoyed. Your TEAN New Zealand Program Manager will provide more advice on your housing options upon application.


TEAN Staff

Our team works with you from start to finish through the study abroad process. Our programs staff will help guide you through the application process to go abroad, then upon arrival in New Zealand, you will meet our team who will provide assistance during your time in-country. Throughout your semester you will meet with the Wellington Resident Director for informal discussions and excursions. Our staff is readily available and able to assist you with any academic, social, or cultural questions or issues that you may face during your time abroad.

About the University

  • Established in 1899, Victoria University of Wellington is comprised of three campuses located within Wellington.
  • The main campus of Kelburn houses the Departments of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, and Engineering. Many Business courses are also taught at Kelburn. Kelburn is elevated in an idyllic setting with views of the harbor. The Department of Business and Law is located on the Pipitea campus which is opposite Parliament and the High Court. The Te Aro campus houses Architecture and Design. Most TEAN participants study at the Kelburn campus, however all of the campuses are walking distance from each other.
  • For students who are interested in learning about New Zealand, Māori and Pasifika people and cultures there is a broad range of courses available at Victoria University.
  • Victoria University ranks in the top 250 universities in the world based on the QS World Rankings, and in the top 100 internationally for arts and humanities and psychology.

Courses

Update to: Courses are available in the below disciplines. For detailed instructions on how to find and select courses, and a list of popular courses, see our course selection instructions. Students enroll in 3-4 courses per semester (45-75 VUW points) which usually transfers as 12-16 US semester credits or 18-24 US quarter credits. 

Students enroll approximately two weeks prior to departure through Victoria University of Wellington’s online system. Enrollment will be finalized once students are on-campus at the Victoria University of Wellington International Orientation.

ENJOY FLEXIBILITY WITH TEAN FLEX

We’ve partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) to help you overcome common study abroad challenges by adding an ASU Online course to your TEAN program. With more than 2,100 courses to choose from, TEAN Flex minimizes academic challenges, like major requirements and limited course options, so you can make the most of your experience abroad. Once you’ve applied, access the Flex form in your TEAN Student Portal for more information on how to add this to your program and enroll in the course you need.

Activities / Immersion

Our local staff arrange various activities during the semester designed to help immerse you into the local culture. These activities are included in your semester program. In addition, if you have a specific interest or hobby, your Wellington-based Resident Director will be able to point you in the right direction. Below are examples of previous activities arranged for students. Note that activities may change each semester.

In addition to the TEAN events, to make sure you don’t miss out on any opportunities, our local staff send out frequent emails letting you know what is happening in Wellington and throughout New Zealand – ranging from community events to music festivals. We aim to tap you into the local culture right from the start.

SOMES ISLAND 

Take a ferry to Maitu/Somes Island. Enjoy the scenery and history of the largest of the three islands in the Wellington Harbor!  

WINE TASTING IN THE WAIRARAPA  

Tour picturesque vineyards among some of the famous wine areas of New Zealand and see a different side of the North Island!  

COFFEE BREAKS 

Wellingtonians love their fabulous coffee. We follow their lead and meet up for coffee and cake at various times during the semester. This is a great opportunity to catch up with your TEAN local support staff. 


OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS

During the semester, you’ll be busy with class and exploring your local area on the weekends. With this in mind, TEAN encourages students to get to know New Zealand better or travel to even more exotic destinations with excursions organized during school breaks. Participating in these excursions will depend on your program dates and semester abroad.

SOUTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand’s South Island offers some of the most magnificent natural environments this planet has to offer and is home to some of the world’s most extreme adventure sports! From the Southern Hemisphere’s highest (and original) bungee jump, to jet boating through ravines, whitewater rafting raging rapids and hiking glaciers, you won’t be bored or disappointed! This excursion is usually offered as a mid-semester break excursion.

From the world famous blue water and white sands of Bondi Beach to the iconic Opera House & Harbour Bridge, this adventure is the perfect way to experience the diversity of Sydney. During your long weekend, you will get a birds eye view of the city from the Sydney Tower Eye, explore the Botanical Gardens, hit the waves with a surf lesson, cruise along the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk, and enjoy a spectacular dinner cruise on Sydney Harbor, and so much more. This weekend, designed to expose you to the life of a Sydneysider, will leave you wanting more of Australia’s largest city!

The laid-back coastal city of Byron Bay is paradise for those who want to experience vibrant and eclectic community of people and beautiful beaches. Surfing is a favorite past time for the locals and tourists alike.  Students will have the opportunity to kayak with the dolphins, visit a local organic farm, and check out the farthest eastern point of Australia and the famous Byron Bay lighthouse.

TEAN has a rolling admissions process. We recommend submitting your application anytime from June for Spring applications, and from January for Fall applications. Late applications may be considered. Contact TEAN if the application deadline has passed.

PASSPORT

PASSPORT

Students must submit a current passport valid for at least 6 months after the program end date for acceptance.

If you do not currently hold a valid passport, please apply for one immediately as processing times can be very lengthy.

Visa

Visa

All students participating in a semester program are required to obtain a Student Visa. Students can apply for their student visa once required documents are received from the university in New Zealand.

Visa application will be 2-3 Months prior to departure

  • Fall semester visa application will start in late April
  • Spring semester visa application will start on late October

You cannot apply for your visa until you receive the required documents from your Program Manager. Once documents are received from the university in New Zealand your Program Manager will email you the documents along with step-by-step instructions. The application is electronic.

On Friday nights check out the Left Bank Market down Cuba Street then on Saturday head the night market at the base of Cuba. Both markets show off the various cuisines of the city – meals are fresh and usually around $12 (roughly US$8).
