2016 marks the 34th year of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, one of the biggest fringe festivals in the world! With hundreds of shows taking place in various theatres, bars and alleyways around Melbourne, there’s something for everyone. From comedy, theatre, dance and visual arts, you’re sure to find something cool to see. The Fringe Hub at the North Melbourne Town Hall is the best place to start browsing what’s on. Here’s where you’ll also find the Fringe Club, which will host various free events throughout the Festival. Some of the best free events to check out are the Opening and Closing night parties.

On the morning of Wednesday 21st September, the Melbourne community and its leaders will come together to wake up for peace and proactively support the UN International Day of Peace, along with millions around the world. Join this event and create silent, powerful intentions of peace and goodwill. This simple but significant meditation event will be led by a team of 21 special guest meditators, from teachers to practitioners, academics to business people, artists to sports individuals, and faith to non-faith representatives.
Hophaus Annual Oktoberfest Dachshund Race [FREE]

Where: Southgate Shopping Precinct, Southgate Ave, Southbank
Hophaus Bavarian Bier Bar Grill along with My Dachshund Online have got together once again to bring you the ‘Hophaus Annual Dachshund Race’ as part of their Oktoberfest celebrations raising money for Dachshund Rescue Australia. The race will be held at the Southgate podium level with heats commencing at 11am and the finals race expected to start around 2pm. There is a costume parade at midday and then the heats will continue. These are fun races, the track is only 15-metres long but you should see the dogs go!
AFL Grand Final Parade [FREE]

Due to our love of footy, the 30th September is the newest public holiday in the state of Victoria and this is the day of the famous AFL Grand Final Parade! A chance for supporters to see their favourite players who will take to the field in the Grand Final. Marching bands, roving entertainment and many others will join the cavalcade of Toyota HiLuxs carrying the two Grand Finalist teams to Yarra Park.

Theatre NQ Shakespeare Under the Stars present Hamlet [$40]

TheatreiNQ’s Shakespeare Under The Stars 2016 is William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Based on the popular Nordic legend of Amleth, Hamlet has endured as one of Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies. TheatreiNQ is taking it back to its roots with a Viking-era adaptation. Townsville’s beautiful Queens Gardens will once again play home to Shakespeare Under The Stars. Directed by Terri Brabon this production features James Raggatt and Townsville’s own Brendan O’Connor. Enjoy a magical night under the stars! Either purchase seats at a table with dinner included or sit in the stands and have a picnic at intermission. Possibly one of the best events on offer in Townsville, and very much worth checking out!
Riverway Movie Night: Minions [FREE]

Minions have been on this planet far longer than we have. They all share the same goal – to serve the most despicable master around. Finding a master is easy, keeping a master – that’s where things got tricky. But then one brave minion, Kevin, stepped forward to find the biggest and baddest villain to serve. Kevin is joined by Stuart and Bob in his mission. Bob was frightened of the job ahead and Stuart was hungry for bananas mostly. They find themselves at Villain-con and meet super villain Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock). This fun, uplifting animation will leave you laughing and hungry for bananas.

After 4 years Earthdance Cairns is back! Set in the rainforest of Kuranda, the Earthdance Festival has live music, electronic dance music and market stalls on offer. King St Crawl [FREE]

Where: Various venues along King St, Erskineville Rd & Enmore Rd
If Newtown is the heart of Sydney’s underground music scene, the pubs, bars, restaurants and shops that line King Street and the surrounding roads are what makes it beat. The King Street Crawl combines both traditional and non traditional venues and spaces to showcase music and the arts, and the businesses in Newtown, Erskineville and Enmore Rd. It’s an opportunity to see some local Australian bands, check out the lineup on the website.
Taste of Coogee [FREE]

The annual food and wine fest ‘Taste of Coogee’ is an opportunity to sample some of the best food from local eateries little Jack Horner, Poke, Sofrito, La Spiagiia & Coogee Pavilion. Ex MasterChef contestant Mindy Woods’ will be launching her pop-up container restaurant which will serve up fresh Mexican inspired food.
New Romance Exhibition [FREE]

If you have been to Circular Quay recently you may have noticed the huge ‘biodome’ parked outside the Museum of Contemporary Art. The installation is part of the MCA’s exhibition New Romance: Art and the PostHuman. Artists from Australia and Korea imagine the future-human experience in this new show. Born across five decades, from the 1940s to 80s, the artists employ an eclectic array of technologies in their works. Drawing inspiration from science fiction, robotics, biotechnology, consumer products and social media.
Kirribilli Market [FREE]

Where: Kirribilli Bowling Green, 68 Alfred Street, Kirribilli
A visit to the Kirribilli Markets is an opportunity to explore the North Shore of the harbour. The markets are located at the exit of Milsons point station, the first stop once you cross the harbour bridge. Kirribilli General Market features over 100 stall of new, second hand fashion and accessories. You can also find unique antiques, collectables and homewares. There are a number of food stalls so you can grab something to eat and wander down to the harbour foreshore where you can find a seat under the harbour bridge. The market is 5 minutes from Luna Park (free entry) where you can ride the ferris wheel and experience views of the bridge and harbour.
Sydney Fringe Festival [FREE and Ticked Events]

Sydney Fringe Festival is back for its seventh year – inviting Sydney to see over 300 productions spread through more than 50 venues across five ‘cultural villages’. Highlights include Fringe Ignite, the festival’s opening party (September 3 in Darlinghurst’s Stanley Street & surrounding laneways) and a massive Silent Dinner Party at Paddington Town Hall on Saturday September 24.
Encampment at Carriageworks [FREE]

Where: Carriageworks, 245 Wilson St, Eveleigh
The concrete jungle of Carriageworks is brighter as of this week, with the arrival of six sprawling hand-painted jewel-toned tents – courtesy of artist Francesco Clemente. Born in Naples and based in New York and India for much of his career, Clemente broke through the New York art scene in the late 1970s. The work was created over three years in collaboration with an artisan community in Rajasthan. It’s super easy to get to Carriageworks, catch a train to Redfern station and it’s a five minute walk.
