What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

As someone who is pursuing a career in speech pathology, the fact that Australia is so highly ranked globally in healthcare was the dominant factor in choosing it as my study abroad destination. I am curious to see Australia’s healthcare system in action, and at a direct person-to-person level to talk with University of Newcastle professors and the city’s speech pathologists to gain knowledge from their insights. Of specific interest to me is the fact that housed onsite at UN is a strong Speech Pathology program that includes a Stuttering Clinic which offers assessment and treatment to local children & adults.

Alexandra P.

Home University: University of South Florida

Headed to: Townsville, Australia

Host University: James Cook University

What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

My lifelong dream is to become a Marine Biologist. I have always wanted to study the marine environment and species of the Great Barrier Reef, which is one of the reasons why I chose James Cook University in Townsville, Australia. Aside from being so close to the Great Barrier Reef, they are known as a world-class educational University, with a tremendous amount of opportunities for me to get hands-on experience doing what I love.

What are you most looking forward to?

There are so many things I am looking forward to! I want to immerse myself in the local culture, try new foods, explore everything I can, and take full advantage of research and educational opportunities at James Cook University. On the weekends, I hope to be able to scuba dive in the great Barrier Reef and travel as much as possible, while making new friends and memories.

Kayla K.

Home University: University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Headed to: Dunedin, New Zealand

Host University: University of Otago

What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

I laugh about this now, but the truth is that in second grade I did a project on New Zealand and learned that there are more sheep than people. Turns out that was cool enough to seven-year-old me to want to go ever since.

What are you most looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to so many things, but I think I’m most excited to throw on sneakers and just explore such a beautiful place with new people. Perhaps I’ll even make it to the North Island and run into a sheep or two.

Jacob S.

Home University: Rowan University

Headed to: Brisbane, Australia

Host University: University of Queensland

What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

I have always wanted to travel the world but the main reason I chose Brisbane, Australia as my study abroad destination is because my childhood friend lives there. I met him in elementary school when he moved to the US. Unfortunately he had to move back to Australia come middle school, but that didn’t affect our friendship. We have kept in consistent contact and this will be the first time I see him in three years and first time I experience Australia. The warm climate, beaches and exotic species are always a plus too!

What are you most looking forward to?

I most look forward to experiencing a new culture and part of the world. I have never been outside of the country before, so I plan to take advantage of my time abroad by exploring Brisbane and the surrounding area. This will help me become a global citizen with many unforgettable memories along the way. It’ll also be fun to do all this with my childhood friend.

Jillian P.

Home University: Virginia Tech

Headed to: Singapore

Host University: Singapore Management University

What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

I was inspired to choose Singapore by my family’s Asian heritage. Singapore is a melting pot of cultures and I knew it would offer me perspectives and relationships I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else!

What are you most looking forward to?

I am most looking forward to growing my cultural knowledge and fostering relationships with new friends. I hope to gain international business knowledge and learn perspectives from those I would not have been able to meet had it not been for this study abroad experience.

Ryan N.

Home University: University of New Hampshire

Headed to: Melbourne, Australia

Host University: University of Melbourne

What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

I chose Melbourne for a ton of reasons. For one, I have never been out of the country – besides Canada – and I really wanted to push myself to go somewhere I may never get the chance to go again. On top of that, I wanted to experience a place where I would not need to learn a new language, but still need to adapt and be influenced by the culture. On top of this, the school is amazing and having lived in Boston, I’ve learned to love cities. Ultimately, I wanted a destination that I could really see myself in while gaining an excellent education and the opportunity to develop skills, make memories, and just learn new things.

What are you most looking forward to?

I am most looking forward to meeting amazing people, making lifelong memories, and pushing myself to try new things. Also, I am super excited to be in Melbourne and simply experience living there.

Michelle C.

Home University: University of New Hampshire

Headed to: Brisbane, Australia

Host University: University of Queensland

What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

I have wanted to visit Australia since I was in middle school and I have wanted to attend the University of Queensland since I was a Sophomore in high school. My biggest dream is to live in Australia one day because of the country and the wildlife, so I wanted to experience Australia before I permanently move there. I am extremely excited to take advantage of the new opportunities that I will have at the University of Queensland and explore the rest of Australia.

What are you most looking forward to?

I am looking forward to so many things while in Australia including exploring the outback and diving in the Great Barrier Reef. This is going to be a new experience for me to try and figure out, but studying abroad is all about getting outside of your comfort zone and trying new things. Soon I will be embarking on the adventure of a lifetime for me and I am so excited for everything that is to come!

Angelena F.

Home University: University of South Carolina

Headed to: Brisbane, Australia

Host University: University of Queensland

What inspired you to pick your study abroad destination?

I chose Australia because it is absolutely beautiful, and since I enjoy hiking and various other outdoor activities it seems like the perfect place for me! I also am excited to learn about Australian healthcare methods and ideologies; as an exercise science major, I believe learning from perspectives outside of the US and what I am accustomed to will help me become the best healthcare professional that I can be!

What are you most looking forward to?

What I am most looking forward to is trying new things and stepping out of my comfort zone. Obviously, I am also excited to travel and see Australia as well as meet new people, but I am hoping that this experience will allow me to become the type of person who tries new things without hesitation.
