Program Details

Orientation

You will be invited to an orientation and welcome session on your first day at the University of Newcastle. We will provide you with all the necessary information, including student support, facility access, Wi-Fi details, and any other services required to set you up for a successful summer program.

TEAN Staff

Our team works with you start to finish through the study abroad process. Our programs staff will help guide you through the application process to go abroad, then upon arrival in Australia, you will meet our team who will provide assistance during your time in-country. Throughout your semester you will meet with the Newcastle Resident Director for informal discussions and excursions. Our staff is readily available and able to assist you with any academic, social, or cultural questions or issues that you may face during your time abroad.

Established in 1965, the University of Newcastle’s campus hosts more than 37,000 students including approx. 6,000 international students.

The university is working towards being carbon neutral by 2025 and is recognized globally by the QS World University rankings.
Set in a natural bushland setting, close to some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches, the campus is situated approximately seven miles west of the city and is easily accessible via train, bus or bike from the city center.
Students will be able to access approximately 100 student social clubs and fully equipped gym along with an Olympic sized swimming pool.

Location

The University of Newcastle is located in Newcastle on the East coast of Australia, just under 2 hours north of Sydney. The Newcastle airport is nearby for easy access to other major cities in Australia. Our Newcastle Callaghan Campus is approximately 7 miles west of the city center and the Newcastle City Campus is situated in the center of Newcastle CBD within close proximity to the beautiful white sand beaches. The university offers free shuttles between its Newcastle campuses, and shuttles from Newcastle Callaghan to nearby local shops.

Newcastle is well-known for its vibrant culture, spectacular coastline, affordability of living, and is considered a safe and friendly place to live.

College of Human and Social Futures

TOUR3003 – Destination Marketing (incl. field trip)

Destination differentiation is critical in the fiercely competitive and highly dynamic global tourism market. Effective destination marketing requires strategies that are both responsible and innovative. This course explores how sustainable tourism principles inform the marketing strategies of real world destinations. The course features a fieldwork component for students to learn directly from the experiences of destination marketing practitioners. Drawing on this knowledge, students will develop a marketing mix for a destination that balances the demands of visitors with the needs of host communities and the broader environment.

College of Engineering, Science and Environment

EXSS2030 – Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology (incl. field trip)	Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology is a fundamental element in empowering learning, well-being and athletic performance of different individuals and teams. This course introduces students to various fundamental constructs that impact on adherence, participation and performance in sport, exercise and physical activity. The content provides a basic overview of key concepts that help to recognize, explain and interpret human behavior within sport, exercise and physical activity settings. The course will provide students with an ability to recognize the broad and inter-linked influences that psychological factors have within sport, exercise and physical activity settings. Students will need to demonstrate an ability to interpret and modify such factors to enhance one’s performance and wellbeing. By the end of this course, students will develop sound understanding of key concepts in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology and will be able to identify and apply evidence-based behavioral techniques needed to increase exercise adherence, improve health and fitness, and performance needs.
ENVS2006 -Ecology and Management of Wildlife (incl. field trip)	Wildlife around the world are increasingly heading toward extinction. One method governments use to avert this extinction crisis is to create threatened species recovery plans that outline what we know about a species and how we can keep it alive into the future. This course will develop your understanding of the ecology and management of wildlife via the creation of a species recovery plan. Students will work in groups to identify why recovery plans are important, and then to collect the information necessary on their chosen taxa to compile a recovery plan. In doing so, students will develop skills on species identification and survey methods to ensure they can make appropriate recommendations in their recovery plans. Students will summarise published data on their focal species and related taxa to generate sections of their recovery plan on the species ecology and evolutionary history, unique adaptations, threatening processes and fully costed management solutions.
CHEE2935 – Resource and Energy Optimisation (incl. field trip)	This course introduces you to the concepts of sustainability and cleaner production as applied in an industrial context. The course explores the potential role of engineers in the development of sustainable technologies, with a focus on energy and resources. Process impacts including atmospheric pollution and water use are also considered in addition to greenhouse gas emissions from a variety of energy technology types. Quantitative tools to optimize chemical processes are outlined to increase resource use efficiency.

Tudor Inn Newcastle is centrally located to Newcastle in the suburb of Hamilton. Our rooms are less than 10 minutes away from major shopping centres, beaches, Broadmeadow (and Hamilton) station, Broadmeadow racecourse, Hunter Stadium, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, and a variety of sporting grounds.

Your room will be a double bedroom, shared with one other student. All rooms contain: 31’’ smart TV, Microwave, Fridge, Kettle, Ensuite Bathroom, Iron & board. The complex contains: Communal lounge/dining area, kitchen (including crockery, cutlery, etc) and coin laundry.

HOUSING PREFERENCE FORM

Once you’ve read through the above housing information for your program, please complete the Housing Preference Form which will be sent to you directly from your Program Manager. It is due on March 17, 2023.

PASSPORT

Students must submit a current passport valid for at least 6 months after the program end date for acceptance.

If you do not currently hold a valid passport, please apply for one immediately as processing times can be very lengthy.

VISA

All students participating in a short-term program in Australia (except for Australian passport-holders) are required to obtain an Australian Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) prior to departing for Australia.

Students will apply for the ETA after receiving instructions from their Program Manager, approximately 1-2 months prior to departure. The application is done entirely online, and visas are typically granted within 2 days of applying. The cost is AUD$20.

Andrea Ciotti

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Andrea attended the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, where she graduated with a degree in business focusing on marketing and sports management. After working in the NFL and collegiate athletic departments doing marketing, event planning and community outreach, Andrea headed back to university working as a marketing coordinator for UCF’s on-campus housing department. Always up for an adventure, Andrea lived in North Carolina, Florida and Pennsylvania before falling in love with an Australian and moving to Newcastle, where she has now resided for over five years. As an American abroad in Australia, she’s excited to share Newcastle’s beauty and unique experiences with TEAN students and serve as a bridge between the U.S. and Australia.

Jess grew up in a small beach town on the coast of South Carolina. While attending the College of Charleston where she played soccer and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, she decided to study abroad through TEAN at Bond University, in Queensland Australia. With Jess’ undeniable love for the ocean, adventure, travel, and community, this transformative study abroad experience as well as her other international travels guided her to want to help others have their own life-changing travel experiences. Along with helping others get stoked about their travels, Jess enjoys surfing, skateboarding, painting, and an occasional yoga class.
