Program Details

Orientation

Arrive in South Korea for a one-day orientation run by our Seoul-based staff. An introductory tour around Seoul and a welcome dinner will get you accustomed to your surroundings and our local support team. The day before classes start at Korea University, take advantage of the university Orientation during which you will be introduced to the KU campus.


Housing

Students live on campus in modern, student dormitory accommodation with twin share rooms. There are spacious kitchens on each floor along with an additional common study space. Utilities and Internet are included.


TEAN Staff

Our team works with you start to finish through the study abroad process. Our programs staff will help guide you through the application process to go abroad, then upon arrival in South Korea, you will meet our team who will provide assistance during your time in-country. Our staff is readily available and able to assist you with any academic, social, or cultural questions or issues that you may face during your time abroad.

Cultural Activities

Korea University helps immerse you in the local culture by providing “buddy assistants”, local KU students that help organize social and cultural activities for you to feel at home and part of the KU family. From Korean traditional arts, a visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) outside of Seoul or learning K-Pop dances, KU makes every effort to ensure that you are able to make the most of your summer in Korea.

Courses

Courses

Choose from more than 80 courses across 7 disciplines, all taught in English (with the exception of Korean language courses). Students will enroll in courses during the application process, but can make changes up until the first week of classes during the add/drop period.

Students can choose to enroll in the 4-week or 6-week program. Students may take 1 or 2 courses during the 4-week program. Students must take 2 courses during the 6-week program. Each course is worth 3 KU credits, typically transferring as 3 U.S. semester credits or 4.5 quarter credits. Students have the opportunity to earn up to 6 semester credits (9 quarter credits) during the program. Students needing to take a third course should speak to their TEAN Program Manager when they apply. The participant’s home university will determine ultimate credit approval and transfer.

ENJOY FLEXIBILITY WITH TEAN FLEX

We’ve partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) to help you overcome common study abroad challenges by adding an ASU Online course to your TEAN program. With more than 2,100 courses to choose from, TEAN Flex minimizes academic challenges, like major requirements and limited course options, so you can make the most of your experience abroad. Once you’ve applied, access the Flex form in your TEAN Student Portal for more information on how to add this to your program and enroll in the course you need.

Eligibility

  • 2.5 GPA. Students with a slightly lower GPA should contact TEAN and may be admitted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Enrolled at a two or four-year institution at the time of participation.
  • High school students are eligible to apply but must take classes from the pre-college course list.

Events & Excursions

EVENTS AND EXCURSIONS

Our local staff arrange various activities during the semester designed to help immerse you in the local culture. These activities are included in your semester program. Examples include Tree planting, Hanbok in the palace, Hanriver cruise, City view from the tallest building in Korea, indie band concert, walking Namsan mountain trail and meeting with a North Korean defector

Below are the two excursions included:

NAMI ISLAND (THE ECO-FRIENDLY ISLAND)

Nami Island provides various cultural and environmental experiences. The island is known for being  eco-friendly. While visitors are able to walk and bike around the island, cars are not permitted. Since 2001, 70% of the trash generated by the island has been recycled to create beautiful art and decorations. The island is also know for being the filming location of a Korean drama, Winter Sonata.

BUSAN (THE BEACH CITY)

Enjoy an overnight trip to Busan, Korea’s second largest city, known for pristine beaches and picturesque mountains. From casual shops and cute cafes to fish markets teeming with every species imaginable. Feel the wave of Busan with us, stroll around the splendid beach, and taste delicious seafood.

Veritas

VERITAS CHRISTIAN STUDY ABROAD

Veritas Christian Study Abroad with TEAN is designed for students looking to deepen their faith while living abroad. This program combines the Hanyang University study abroad program with faith-based program elements meant to aid spiritual growth and immerse you into your host community. Veritas Christian Study Abroad programs include all the same benefits of a TEAN program in addition to on-site spiritual support from a Veritas Mentor, local ministry opportunities, and an additional course taught from a Biblical worldview. 

Ministry opportunities in Seoul are often through the local church and may include children’s ministry, worship & Bible studies, prayer & intercession, and more. There may be potential opportunities to serve with a ministry for North Korean refugees suicide prevention.

PASSPORT

All students must submit a current passport valid 6 months after the program end date for acceptance.

VISA

VISA

All students participating in a summer program are required to obtain a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) prior to departing for South Korea. Korean passport holders do not need a K-ETA.

Students do NOT need to apply for a student visa, only a K-ETA is required. The nonrefundable fee is $9-$10 USD.

Students will apply for the K-ETA after flights are purchased. The application is electronic and takes less than 48 hours (about 2 days) to receive approval. More details will be provided in your TEAN student portal after program acceptance.

TEAN Scholarships

Apply for TEAN scholarships – starting at $1,000 – for the chance to receive money specifically for studying abroad. Each year we award thousands of dollars in need- and merit-based scholarships, diversity scholarships, a full ride scholarship and more. Visit our scholarships page for details!


University Scholarships

In addition to the above TEAN scholarships, Korea University provides one additional $2,000 scholarship and one $1,000 each summer. Any TEAN Korea students that apply for a TEAN scholarship will automatically be considered for these university specific scholarships.

Jena was born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In her sophomore year of college, she studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea at Korea University. There, a passion for traveling and experiencing new cultures was ignited. When she graduated from college, she worked in the music and events industry in Nashville, Tennesse before merging her love of travel into her position at TEAN. Most recently she’s traveled to Mexico City and has done solo trips to Seattle, Atlanta, and Dallas. Outside of work, Jena loves going to concerts, reading, volunteering with dogs, and doing yoga.

Chowon Kim

Student Services Coordinator - Seoul

Born and raised in Seoul, Chowon has always loved meeting new people who have different cultures and experiences. She decided to start a journey in Seattle, Washington, then moved to Portland, Oregon where she earned a BA in International/Global Studies from Portland State University. So far, the journey has made her experience diverse views of global perspectives. Chowon is very excited to share her experiences and knowledge of Korea with TEAN students.

Chan Um

Student Services Coordinator

Born and raised in Seoul. Chan majored in Nursing and participated in an internship program in Hamburg, Germany during her University. While interning, she realized that she liked to communicate in English with people from different cultures. After graduation, she went to Dublin, Ireland to improve her English proficiency and also worked at an Irish nursing home. During her time in Dublin, she gained plenty of opportunities to learn about diverse cultures and enjoyed it. With her previous experiences, she understands various cultures and loves to learn more about them. She is ready to meet the TEAN students and share with them her love of Korea.

Kyung-shin Hwang

Student Services Coordinator

Growing up in Bucheon, a mid-sized city in South Korea, Kyungshin – ‘Shin’ in short – dreamed of one day exploring the wider world. She pursued her college education in Seoul, where she majored in Economics and Public Relations at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. During her undergraduate years, she took a year off to live in Ireland, where she fell in love with the experience of immersing herself in new cultures and meeting people from the other side of the world. Over the years, she has resided in several countries including Germany, Australia, and Malaysia, and has travelled to many other countries. After working for a non-profit organization in Seoul for the visually impaired, she has joined TEAN. In her free time, Shin enjoys reading books and discovering new music.
