Program Details

Orientation

Arrive in South Korea for a one-day orientation run by our Seoul-based staff. An introductory tour around Seoul and welcome meal will get you accustomed to your surroundings and our local support team.


Housing

Students are guaranteed on-campus housing in Seoul. The on-campus dorm is a twin share room. Single rooms are not available. There are kitchens available to use in each dorm and a common study space or lounge on each floor. Utilities and WiFi are included.

Students will use the business hotels that Hanyang University arranges in China and in Japan.

Our team works with you start to finish through the study abroad process. Our programs staff will help guide you through the application process to go abroad, then upon arrival in South Korea, you will meet our team who will provide assistance during your time in-country. Our staff is readily available and able to assist you with any academic, social, or cultural questions or issues that you may face during your time abroad.

About Hanyang University

  • Established in 1939, specifically as a university of technology, Hanyang University is one of the top private research institutions in South Korea.
  • The university ranks 24th in the 2020 QS World University Rankings of the best universities in Asia and 150th in the world.
  • While the university has expanded to offer a comprehensive range of courses, it is still known for its technological focus and was ranked 11th in Reuter’s 2019 Asia Pacific’s Most Innovative Universities
  • Located in east Seoul, Hanyang University’s campus is easily accessible to the rest of the capital.
  • The campus is similar to American university campuses, offering comparable student facilities and amenities.

Kickstart your adventure abroad at Hanyang University.  Study STEM, including engineering, science, math, business and economics, art and design, and communications. At Hanyang, further your knowledge with hands-on learning in high-tech labs and unique innovation spaces. While diving into coursework at Hanyang, call Seoul home for 4-weeks. Explore all of the different neighborhoods of South Korea’s buzzing capital city.  Participate in different included cultural excursions provided by Hanyang University like K-Dynamics, K-Tradition, K-History, K-Modern, and K-Culture.

After spending the month in South Korea, jet off to your first stop, China. While visiting Shanghai, students will get firsthand experience applying the material they have learned in Korea, To get an inside look of e-commerce in China, students will visit numerous vegetable factories. Outside the classroom, students will have the opportunity for cultural immersion by exploring the historic gardens and learning the art of Chinese painting techniques.  Become familiar with the culture and history of Shanghai.

The final stop on this travel program is Japan. Get a more comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture, law and business by attending seminars hosted by highly respected professors at Waseda University, one of country’s top universities . Later, network with professors and students at Waseda’s welcome party! Hanyang offers a variety of excursions for cultural immersion. Experience Japanese culture  while exploring the temples and shrines of Kamakura. Meet Hello Kitty and all of your favorite characters at Sanrino Puroland before heading back to Korea.

Courses

Courses

At Hanyang, choose from more than 90 courses across 14 disciplines taught in English, plus have the option to take Korean language courses and research course. Students can enroll in 1-3 courses (3-9 Hanyang credits), which usually transfers as 3-9 U.S. semester credits or 4.5-13.5 quarter credits. Some elective courses are only worth 1 credit (1 U.S. semester credit). The participant’s home university will determine ultimate credit approval and transfer.

Courses are available in English in the below disciplines. This program requires all participants to take International Relations in East Asia (3 credits/ 45 contact hours). ENJOY FLEXIBILITY WITH TEAN FLEX

We’ve partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) to help you overcome common study abroad challenges by adding an ASU Online course to your TEAN program. With more than 2,100 courses to choose from, TEAN Flex minimizes academic challenges, like major requirements and limited course options, so you can make the most of your experience abroad. Once you’ve applied, access the Flex form in your TEAN Student Portal for more information on how to add this to your program and enroll in the course you need.

Eligibility

Eligibility

  • 2.5 GPA. Students with a slightly lower GPA should contact TEAN and may be admitted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Enrolled at a two- or four-year institution at the time of participation.
  • Gap year students can apply if they have completed high school at the time of enrollment, and can show proof of acceptance into a U.S. institution for the semester immediately following their program at Hanyang University.

Events & Excursions

EVENTS AND EXCURSIONS

Our local staff arrange various activities during the semester designed to help immerse you in the local culture. These activities are included in your semester program. Examples include Tree planting, Hanbok in the palace, Han river cruise, City view from the tallest building in Korea, indie band concert, walking Namsan mountain trail and meeting with a North Korean defector

NAMI ISLAND (THE ECO-FRIENDLY ISLAND)

Nami Island provides various cultural and environmental experiences. The island is known for being  eco-friendly. While visitors are able to walk and bike around the island, cars are not permitted. Since 2001, 70% of the trash generated by the island has been recycled to create beautiful art and decorations. The island is also know for being the filming location of a Korean drama, Winter Sonata.

BUSAN (THE BEACH CITY)

Enjoy an overnight trip to Busan, Korea’s second largest city, known for pristine beaches and picturesque mountains. From casual shops and cute cafes to fish markets teeming with every species imaginable. Feel the wave of Busan with us, stroll around the splendid beach, and taste delicious seafood.

TEAN has a rolling admissions process. We recommend submitting your application anytime from January for Summer applications. Late applications may be considered. Contact TEAN if the application deadline has passed.

VERITAS

VERITAS CHRISTIAN STUDY ABROAD

Veritas Christian Study Abroad with TEAN is designed for students looking to deepen their faith while living abroad. This program combines the Hanyang University study abroad program with faith-based program elements meant to aid spiritual growth and immerse you into your host community. Veritas Christian Study Abroad programs include all the same benefits of a TEAN program in addition to on-site spiritual support from a Veritas Mentor, local ministry opportunities, and an additional course taught from a Biblical worldview. 

Ministry opportunities in Seoul are often through the local church and may include children’s ministry, worship & Bible studies, prayer & intercession, and more. There may be potential opportunities to serve with a ministry for North Korean refugees. suicide prevention.

PASSPORT

PASSPORT

All students must submit a current passport valid 6 months after the program end date for acceptance.

VISA

VISA

Students from visa waived countries will be required to obtain a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) prior to departing for South Korea for the summer. Students from Non-Visa waived countries will have to apply for a tourist visa and check the availability for the multi-entry tourist visa (C-3-9)

For the trip to China, citizens of the 53 countries traveling to China for transit purpose are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.  If you are not eligible, apply for a tourist visa (L-visa) prior to departure.

For the trip to Japan, consult the Japanese consulate and check your eligibility for visa exemption to Japan.  If you need a visa to enter Japan, apply for a short-term stay visa prior to departure.

Euisoo Chang

Resident Director

Born and raised in Seoul, Euisoo knew he wanted to study abroad during college after he experienced traveling to Europe for the first time in high school. Euisoo graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh, majoring in Hospitality Management and participating in the National Student Exchange program in Hilo, Hawaii. After graduation, he went to Tokyo on a Working Holiday visa to discover different Asian cultures and fell in love with the country. He has now visited more than 30 countries and is still eager to explore more of the world! Before working in international education, he worked in hospitality in South Korea and Canada for five years.

Jena Fowler

Program Manager

South Korea

Jena was born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In her sophomore year of college, she studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea at Korea University. There, a passion for traveling and experiencing new cultures was ignited. When she graduated from college, she worked in the music and events industry in Nashville, Tennesse before merging her love of travel into her position at TEAN. Most recently she’s traveled to Mexico City and has done solo trips to Seattle, Atlanta, and Dallas. Outside of work, Jena loves going to concerts, reading, volunteering with dogs, and doing yoga.

Kyung-shin Hwang

Student Services Coordinator

Growing up in Bucheon, a mid-sized city in South Korea, Kyungshin – ‘Shin’ in short – dreamed of one day exploring the wider world. She pursued her college education in Seoul, where she majored in Economics and Public Relations at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. During her undergraduate years, she took a year off to live in Ireland, where she fell in love with the experience of immersing herself in new cultures and meeting people from the other side of the world. Over the years, she has resided in several countries including Germany, Australia, and Malaysia, and has travelled to many other countries. After working for a non-profit organization in Seoul for the visually impaired, she has joined TEAN. In her free time, Shin enjoys reading books and discovering new music.

Chan Um

Student Services Coordinator

Born and raised in Seoul. Chan majored in Nursing and participated in an internship program in Hamburg, Germany during her University. While interning, she realized that she liked to communicate in English with people from different cultures. After graduation, she went to Dublin, Ireland to improve her English proficiency and also worked at an Irish nursing home. During her time in Dublin, she gained plenty of opportunities to learn about diverse cultures and enjoyed it. With her previous experiences, she understands various cultures and loves to learn more about them. She is ready to meet the TEAN students and share with them her love of Korea.
