Townsville, Australia, would you be able to point it out on a map? In the Outback? On the West coast or East coast? Where is Townsville and what is the big deal about this town that makes it worth visiting?

Being a coastal city within Queensland Australia, Townsville is located within the northeast side of Australia, where there’s always great sunny weather year-round within this tropical ecosystem. Here you can achieve the full Australian experience without having to be engulfed into a big city. This charming town consists major of coastal beach areas, hiking locations, historical sites, fun city events, and an amazing research university. While you may not notice this town on a map, it is completely worth the visit!

One of the first days I was in Townsville, with the official town sign, and the adorable city behind me. Exploring the city through public transportation or by foot is such an amazing experience I am thankful to have done.

Some of the big city highlights include Castle Hill, the beaches at the Strand, coffee culture, farmers markets, and rugby games and fun night life. The Queensland Country bank stadium in central Townsville is perfect for you to go cheer on the North Queensland Cowboys rugby team. Getting discounted student tickets is the best way to spend an afternoon in the town. Additionally, by far the best-selling feature of living in Townsville is the ocean. From the Strand beach access points, to the rock pools overlooking the ocean, and the proximity to the Great Barrier Reef there’s always ocean activities at the ready. The strand beach with postcard worthy view of Magnetic Island which is just a quick 20-minute ferry ride across the water too. Perfect for day or weekend long trips. Townsville and Magnetic Island offer an array of snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities to get you underwater as much as possible, exploring the Great Barrier Reef ecosystems.

My personal favorite part about Townsville is that you are fully immersed into the local lifestyle, along with feeling as if you are not just a tourist, but that you can become a local true resident. Everyone here is always incredibly kind, helpful, and accepting. Additionally studying at James Cook University within Townsville, has been one of most unbelievable and incredible experiences ever. The courses offered, professors, research opportunities, and hiking trails on campus are just some of the amazing factors that comprise this stunning university. For biology involved majors, among many other majors, I could not recommend studying at James Cook University enough! Townsville is a charming, little town just waiting to be further explored!
