ABOUT THE COURSES
Course Levels
- The course levels at RMIT are 1000-4000. There isn’t a distinction between undergraduate and postgraduate courses in terms of course code, so you’ll need to be sure you are paying attention to the Study Level listed on each course.
- In Australia, undergraduate degrees are 3 years instead of 4, so the first-level courses dive right into material specific to that discipline, without too much intro-level context.
- With this in mind, think of 1000-level courses as sophomore level, 2000-level courses as junior level, and 3000-level and 4000-level courses as senior level. Content in the 3000- and 4000-level courses will be very advanced, and you must be confident that you have the required background knowledge before taking them.
Credit Transfer
- Students enroll in 3-4 courses per semester, each worth 12 RMIT credit points. Each course is equivalent to 3-4 US credits (as determined by your home institution).
- It is your responsibility to discuss credit transfer with your home institution prior to departure. Refer to the “Academic Records Policies” form in your TEAN Student Portal for more information.
Prerequisites
- Your eligibility to enroll in courses will be determined by RMIT faculty based on previous coursework reflected on your college transcript(s). For courses that indicate prerequisites, RMIT will review your transcript to ensure you have taken closely matching courses.
HOW TO FIND COURSES
- First, read through the Course Selection Instructions page. Key takeaways below:
- Recommended vs. Restricted Courses: Courses labeled as “recommended” will be quickly approved for enrollment by RMIT faculty. Courses labeled as “restricted” will require an additional approval process, and you may be denied approval if you do not meet the prerequisite requirements (these can include prerequisite courses, the subject you major in, class standing, etc.). You will want to read the course description carefully and ensure that your transcript reflects the background needed for the course.
- Portfolio Requirements: Design courses (VART, GRAP, ARCH courses) require a portfolio to be submitted, to be reviewed by RMIT faculty before approval is granted. If you select any courses that require a portfolio, you will need to email your TEAN Program Manager a PDF or link that includes 10-15 pieces of original work related to the course.
- Computer Science and IT Requirements: If you select courses in Computer Science and IT, please complete this form and email it to your TEAN Program Manager.
- Credit Points: A standard RMIT course is worth 12 credit points. If a course is worth 24 credit points, it will have the course load of 2 courses, so be aware when selecting. You may not choose any course that is individually worth 36 or 48 credit points.
- Vocational Courses: These courses are on a different calendar, and you will not be able to enroll in them.
- Location: TEAN students can take courses at the City Campus and the Brunswick Campus. Please note the Brunswick campus is approximately 20 minutes via public transportation from the city.
- Then, find course names and codes using the Course Search tool for study abroad students.
- Filter by level of study (undergraduate) and the semester you are attending (Semester 1 is Feb – June; Semester 2 is July – Nov).
- Either search by keyword by typing in part of a course name at the top, or filter by the RMIT School to see every option in that study area.
- After you press Search and are looking at your course options, take note of the comments section to see if it is Recommended or Restricted, and any other potential requirements.
- Next, find course descriptions using the Course Guide.
- When you see a course name that is of interest, copy the course code (i.e. MKTG1041) and paste it into the Course Guide. Press Search.
- The overview information (campus, career, school, etc.) will be in a table at the top. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the Course Description.
- Be sure to read the “Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities” section. Ensure you have the proper background to take the course.

Events & Excursions
Activities / Immersion
Our local staff arrange various activities during the semester designed to help immerse you in the local culture. These activities are included in your semester program. In addition, if you have a specific interest or hobby, your Melbourne-based TEAN Resident Director will be able to point you in the right direction. Below are examples of previous activities arranged for students. Note that activities change each semester.
In addition to the TEAN-organized events, to make sure you don’t miss out on any opportunities, our local staff send out frequent emails letting you know what is happening in Melbourne. Ranging from community events to music festivals, we tap you into the local culture right from the start.
Melbourne Walking Tour
Included within the first few weeks after arriving in Melbourne, we walk and jump on trams all over the city, clueing you into the local secrets. Melbourne’s city center is made up of winding bylanes and it’s here where you find unique cafes, bars, restaurants and galleries. We’ll also explore Melbourne’s urban villages, ending the day in an iconic locals-only venue for dinner. This day will set you up with the knowledge you need to make the most of your time in this great city.
Aussie Rules Football match
There is no sporting event that gets the sports-mad Victorian more vocal than an Aussie Rules Football match. Australian Rules football began in Victoria in the 1850s, predating American football, rugby and soccer. It’s not like other football types, the best explanation is to experience a game yourself. We see a game between two local rivals and sample a local culinary favorite – the meat pie! It’s the hot dog equivalent of the Australian spectator sporting experience.
Local Original Live Music
Melbourne is known for its local, live music scene and excellent intimate venues. We make sure students get to experience becoming part of a local crowd by heading to a show of an Australian band at an incredible venue. If you have a music genre preference, let your local staff know and we’ll try to accommodate your request – or at least give you some recommendations to check out on your own!
